Subject: front end suspension noise

Hello.

Last week my 2000 CC had it's 36-month service. Afterward I noticed a very loud squeak coming from the front, driver's side wheel area. If I rocked the truck up and down by pushing down on the bumper, the noise was very apparent.

The truck had to go back to have a minor fuel leak fixed, so I had them check this problem. They said the sway bar bushings were dry, so they lubricated them. When I picked it up it seemed to be okay at first, but by the time I had driven about 5 miles the noise was back – though not as bad.

Could there be something else wrong? A friend suggested that something could be leaking onto the bushings and eating away the lubricant. It seems odd that this started right after the 36-month service (it had an oil change and lube, and the radiator was flushed).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Okay, I found this thread , which says this is a common problem. The timing (starting immediatly after it was serviced) still makes me a bit suspicious.

Take the drivers side shock bolt off ( inside the engine bay)and check that the bushing is centered in the shock tube hole. It can drive you crazy if the shock rod is rubbing the frame. Also check that thread, Energy Suspension makes greaseable sway bar bushings. Good luck.

Thanks.

I called the dealer where I had the work done, and talked to the service manager. He said lubricating the bushings usually works, but since that didn't work they'll replace them. Hopefully that will take care of it!

I have a similar problem but a little different, I recently had 4 new shocks and new rotors put on my 2001 4x4. I now hear a rattling noise from the front when going over rough roads at a slow speed, The difference is when I go over the same road with my foot on the brake the rattle is not there, I've had the truck back to the shop who did the work twice, watched them check everything they did and nothing is loose or shows signs of rattling. Any suggestions.

That rattle is the brake pads in the calipers. There are clips that hold the pads in place and they can rust or get bent and stop functioning. They probably got messed up when they replaced your rotors. That is why you don't hear it with the brake on, the pads are being squeezed in the calipers and they can't move around. Check it out, I bet that is your culprit.

I agree with 99bludak. I had the same rattle in the front end and the clips on the pads were rusted and or completely gone.
The squeak in the front end is the sway bar bushings. I was told not to lubricate them because the lubricant will attract dust/dirt and cause even faster wear of the bushings. I find the noise is worse when we have longs spans of dry weather due to the bushing also being dry.
