My gas gage on my '94 dakota is always bobbing back and forth especially when the gas tank is full. It settles down after I burn off a 1/4 tank but still moves back and forth once and awhile. What is causing this? Do I have to drop my tank to fix it? And would the bigger 22 gallon tank fit back up in its place? I have a short box regular cab.

You most likely have a problem with your fuel tank sending unit, its a little float inside of your gas tank. You do have to drop your tank, or lift the bed out whichever you are capable of. The gas guage problem is nothing new, since most Dakota owners have been through the same thing! Its very common. The sending unit just unbolts from your fuel pump assembly, and as far as I know, the replacement is only available from the dealer.

blackdak is right.same thing happened to me on my '91. since they were in there i had them change the fuel pump too. the pump and the sending unit are together so they just replaced the whole thing. didnt want to drop the tank again down the road for a fuel pump being that i got a lot of miles on her

I have done this repair on my 95 DAK. You can buy A fuel pump assembly from Advance auto or Auto Zone for over $100.00. It took A friend and I about four or five hours to complete the job.
One thing to look out for is, best to drain the fuel tank BEFORE you drop the tank. the best way to do this is remove the fuel filler tube going to the fuel tank. If not, the anti-siphen ball inside the tube will not allow the siphen hose into the fuel tank.and put plenty of WD-40 on the strap bolts holding the tank up.
good luck on the repair.
