Well folks, this morning I just picked up my Dakota from the muffler shop to get the strange and annoying rattle checked out possibley in my cat. The guys found nothing and even ripped me off for an extra $20.00 they charged me for taking the muffler off for inspection in addition to the cat. Well they didnt and I dont feel like fighting the whole damn thing. I was planning on some mods for my 93 4x4 w/318 and almost 104,000 miles like the gibson group buy, a 3"body lift, big tires, intake, etc. I have decided not keep putting money into a truck with that has problems I cant find, so many miles, and a motor that drinks 2 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles. Hopefully my next truck will be a GenIII 4x4 Dakota w/5.2 or 4.7. God forebid my next truck be a (gulp) fullsize Chevy 4x4 or even worse.....an S-10. As far as my 93 Dakota goes, I give up.

Get the 4.7 4x4 and have some fun. The full size Chevy will kill you at the pump. Don't want to say it but the S10 4x4 does look nice. however.

Stick with the dodge. But start from scratch with a new 4.7 dakota. Dont waste your time with a chevy because your 93 dodge is better.

Wish I could guys but that would be hard for a 19 year old who make a sad living. I will say its well above minimum wage though, and not any bills besides my current truck payment though.

Thats sad to hear Andrew. I too have a '93. It has 92K on it but runs great. It drinks about 1/2 quart of oil every 3000 miles but thats not enough to worry about. You mentioned that you keep putting money into your dak. What other problems have you experienced? I hope everything works out well for you and your dakota.

Other problems include a bad water pump, a couple bad temp sensors, not to mention all the mods I had planned for this truck. I dont look at it like I did before, with visions of how it will look, sound and drive after I put some money into performance parts. Now I just think of it as a ride back and forth to work and think of what I will get next.

Don't give up man, I've had all three Gens and have been happy with all three. And as for that crap about a Dak not taking S-turns well, THAT'S CRAP. Even my '89 V6 long box would corner flat, and that's with one sway bar and 6" rims.
I now have a '98 Sport, and the sway bars on that are better that the firebug or cameroa. I DON"T like Shuvs and wouldn't recommend getting one. Daks are much better and you have all the help you need right here.

Well think about this...

I just got my Dakota which is a '99 Club Cab sport with the 5.2L V8. I didn't want to pay the "new" price which is currently hovering in the "mid 20Ks" so I took advantage of the depreciation that the first owner incurred.

I basically got this truck for $15,995 and it still lists on the N.A.D.A. for around $20K retail. Overall, I got a really good deal from one of the local Dodge dealers and I am sure you can work something out similar in your area.

Of course, the previous owner took really good care of the vehicle and it looks almost new (I have gotten MANY compliments on it) However, by staying under $16K I pretty much got my payment way down from where I would be on a new truck.

You could use the old one as a trade in and get into a '99 or 2000 model without breaking the bank.

Of course I opted to get the 3 year 75,000 mile warranty since there was still some of the basic warranty left on the vehicle, therefore it is just like having a brand new truck with a guarantee for at least 3 more years.

Whatever you do... stay out of that Chevy S-10... way too small if you ask me! I really like the Dak I have now and suffice it to say, this is the first Dodge product I have ever own (being a previous "Ford" man... no more I tell ya!), but I am VERY happy with it.

Just my 2 cents (can I get change for a hun'ned?)

Andrew what state do you live in? One of use might be able to help you out. You should check your plugs and do a compression check. I suspect that you might have some worn out rings or valve guides. You can repair or replace booth. You might also consider a short block and haveing your heads rebuilt. It would not cost that much and would do more to increase performane then any of the mods you might have had in mind. If the bores gauge out ok you could even consider just replaceing rings, guides and bearings. It is common in the aviation industry to rebuild just one cyclinder on an engine if only one is bad.

Thanks guys! To sandman, I live in Sacramento, Ca. Also, it seems like alot of trouble to have my engine work done and for some reason, if I am without my Dak for even one day, I get real crabby, just ask my folks. Also, I plan on trading my current Dak in on whatever I get. Plus, this is my first vehicle ever and it would be nice to see what else is ou there. If any of you could give me unbiased opinions(yeah right) on other pick-ups(domestic only) I would appreciate it, thanks.

There are other good trucks out there but overall the Dakota is the best bang for the buck. You will get more from a Dakota than anyother truck on the road. Room handleing, confort, power towing payload. Some truck might have more of one or theother but none have then all like the Dakota. Thats why it alway wins in all the compitiotons. It has won in full size class and midsize class. Go for a dakota you will be happy. But you make yourself feel better go around and test drive all of them it can't hurt.

Thanks I will have to check that out. I still plan on selling my Dakota but a new Dak is looking good. I was at lunch today and saw a new Dak with 31" tires on them and a mean stance. I am leaning towards a Dak more and more. By the way, have any of you read what Z71 Boy has been saying lately? Man that guy sounds like a jerk!

I have owned a 85 Toyota Pickup and beat it to death, wish I hadn't sold it. A 93 Ford Explorer XLT with all options. It was a nice car but it wore out and I traded it for my 2000 DAk with the best motor ever, the 4.7L. Save and work your ass off and buy a Dak with this motor, you cant go wrong. I test drove everything from Tacomas to 35 inch tired 6inch lifted Ford 4 door Powerstrokes, and I still bought the Dak. Remember no matter what the Chevy guys say, they aren't worth a damn. Good luck.

Hey Andrew,

I know your going through the same problem as I am, trust me get the 4.7L Dakota. Yes, I do like Z71's but, I love a Dakota with 4wd and a 4.7L. I've test drove many with the 4.7 and loved everyone of them, except the AWD one maybe. Save your cash, it's well worth it. I know I'm gonna start saving soon.

Hey you think that 104K miles is a lot??? I got a '94 and its got 160K miles on it and I even go 1500 miles over the service date. Also, I to got the reliable 318 engine. Still runs strong and and dosn't lug in O/D. But the tranny is all but completely F--cked up and its drinking some gas due to the cold weather and staying stuck in 3rd most of the time.

Yes, If I had the money. I would by me a GMC Sirra Denoli. I like the Quad steer and its got a H.O 6 liter engine with great tourqe to it. But I read in truck trend that if your foot happy. You'll only get 12 MPG.

Don't go to the dark side....

Buy another Dak!

My 1990 Dak CC Sport is getting really tired with just over 331,000 km (207,000 miles) on it.

It has the 3.9 litre V6 and has never been rebuilt. Even the auto tranny has never been touched. Mind you they are both getting tired...

I have my 2003 CC R/T on order and am waiting patiently here in Toronto.

Love the Dak's and wouldn't even consider a Chevy.

come on guys,I know the book says to change your oil every 6000 miles or so.You should be changing it twice as often. If you did,at 100,000 miles your truck probably not burn as much.I swear by good old STP,it keeps your oil from thining out,a big help.Remember too,if you are towing and hauling, you are asking that motor to do a lot of work. It's going to blow a bit of oil past the rings because of the extra load on the motor.I'm not pointing my finger here, but, most problems start with the owner not the truck.I changed the oil on my 98 318 ram every 3500 miles.I tow a boat plus my friends phords and chebys too often.I admit at 55,000 miles it would use 1/2 a quart or so every 3000 miles. After all the towing,it's time for an oil change anyway.Specaily if you still have that payment book. Not cool making payments and forking over cash to fix it too.
