Ok my step father was messing with his 1992 Dakota,he decided to mess with the timing and When I put the timing light on the #1plug we can get the timing near 10°,but never stays there it always moves around,he said the truck was fine befor he messed with it,sometmes we can get it to idle nicly but then giving a bit of gas it shutters real bad,So he took it to the Mechanic and they changed the exhaust( possible plugged cat) and thats what it felt like to me ,well that did not do anything, now the Mechanic said he has to send the computer out to California for repair,BS in my book. I frequent www.turbobuicks.com so I know how there are parts out there. The Buick computer is called the EMC,I have no idea what Dodge calls them So I cant search for them on the net, please advise me where to start and if you have seen this problem please help. Thanks Everyone

Too bad nobody replied to your post. Timing is controlled by the "PCM", which is the big black computer bolted above the passenger front fender. Timing is not adjustable, unless you get an MSD or other aftermarket ignition and advance/retard. Yeah, you are right. Sending the PCM to cali is BS. Reseting the PCM is easily done by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery and turning the key to start position for about 20 seconds (dont crank engine). I doubt that will help though. If you messed with the timing, thats probably your problem.

Danny, how do you think we should fix the problem, from what I gather you are saying is that the Distributor can just be set anywhere, like where it is now for instance, then reset the computer and we should be fine.am I correct on this,is there a Crank sensor,and/or a Cam Sensor that the computer sets the timing off of.

Thanks so much for your help..

If I were you I would try a self-diagnostic test using your CHECK ENGINE light. This will tell you exactly what areas of concern are in effect inside your computer.

see this website for a diagnostic test:

the distributor cannot be just stabbed in and run. there is an index mark on the distributor housing and a mark on the dist. hold down that you have to line up. other thing you need is a DRBIII to check the sync signal to see if you are close or not.

I have a 1992 dakota with the 3.9 Magnum. Here is what I found out. Most walk up auto stores have computers that are capable of locating a part through oem (Original equipment manufacturer) numbers. Here's the breakdown on how the 3.9L magnum works. The ignition timing cannot be adjusted by turning the distributor. The ecm controls the spark timing with outputs from the crankshaft sensor. The crank sensor is a certain lenghth or shall I say distance from the flexplate or flywheel, depending on how your vehicle is set up. If you have the wrong crank sensor in, even a drb 3 cannot sync the spark/fuel. Be careful when you buy parts for a model year that your vehicle is. IE:november 1998. Reason is even though vehicle is a 1998, your engine design and engine controls were probably designed and manufactured months or even a year before. If you have the correct crank sensor in, you should be able to back probe your distributor sync plate connector with a volt meter and sync it yourself. You should have a steady voltage flowing. If no matter how you turn the distributor your voltage is jumpingcheck crank sensor, ignition coil, cylinder compression, and check spark plugs to see what is firing and what is not. any questions please feel free to e-mail me at Tnorman262004@yahoo.com

Once you line the distributor up like slow2dak said, you must then reset the computer so that when the PCM powers back up, it will assume the distributor is in position, and all adjustments it makes from there on will be in proper time, as well as injector sync. in relation to TDC on #1 piston.
