Just a quick question. I was thinking of going to a local junk yard and pulling a turbo out of truck. It should cost me about $100 to get it, and $150 to get it referbished and fixed like new.. How difficult would it be to install it in a 2000 R/T? Is it possible? I friend of my installed one into his silverado from a semi.. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks
Mike

You can install a turbo virtually in any car or truck. The thing is... You have to know for sure if the turbo is compatible with the size of the engine. Big engines needs a big turbo . Your engine is 5.2 or 5.9 ?? V8 engines run at slow rpm. you need a turbo that spin at low rpm but not too slow. 2500 to 3000rpm to full boost for a good daily drive.I don´t think you drive your truck all the time at 4000rpm... In the exhaust you will find hard work, you´ll have to connect both headers. It will be easy if you install two turbos. One for each header. A guy around here did this in his V8 5.2 ( he putted two turbos).I´m gonna install a turbo in my 4 banger soon.My turbo will spin to full boost at 2000rpm.I talked with some mechanics and all them had the same opinion about my 2.5l 4 banger. The red line in my tach starts at 4600rpm.
good luck!!

Dakfour, thanks alot for the info man.. Let me ask you, I'm not too familiar with performace, but why would I have to install 2 turbos? I know it's because the rpm like you just told me but would I benefit more with 2 turbos or does it not make a difference, and if i cant work with 2 financially what must i do to just install 1..
thanks in advance
mike

do some research and dont buy a turbo for/from a diesel.

Call places like Turbonetics and see what would be a good size turbo to get for your 5.9. If i am not mistaken, most semi's are about 13.5 liters and redline around 2000 rpms.

Buying a broken turbo for $100 isnt really a good deal because you would be lucky to have one rebuilt for $150... it would be more like $250-300. In some cases, you can buy used turbos from like www.turbonetics.com or www.turbocity.com or www.majesticturbo.com.

just do some research... btw, if you dont know much about performance, then a turbo should be the last thing you worry about.

You can install only one if you want to, it makes the same work .Why two?? cause you don´t have to connect the two headers in one to make the turbo spin. You cannot make your turbo spin only with one header... so the easiest way is two turbos, but not cheapest.IntenseDak is right, buy a turbo only new or rebuilt in a good place ( read: with garantee)
I´m not sure if there are turbo headers for V8s.
After I install my turbo I´ll put some pics here.

you can make it spin with only one header feeding it... but it will just heat that one header up more and cause a flux in the gas flow from one side of the motor to the other and can wear out your motor faster.

its really not that hard to combine the two. I did it on mine and Duner put a crossover on his.

I said "you cannot feed with only one header" cause of this problem you said...Did you install a turbo in your ¨V6 intenseDak??? How many hp has your dak today???
I´m gonna install a turbo and it will run with alcohol so I can put more pressure without detonation, and some other mods...like you said in your profile..uh huh.
Oh yeah!!!... I´ll hurt some V8 stock egoes....

yeah i figured you were referring to that but i just wanted to let him know the reasons why. I did have a turbo on my truck but its off now. I dont have my other cars any more so i had to make my truck more reliable (dont want it breaking on my fiance). I really dont know what kinda power it had but i raced a very well modified 96 GT and beat it, beat a LT1 Camaro, and killed a modified RT (and he was pretty cool about it).

Budget turbo build ups are relatively cheap to get all the parts and stuff together, but it's the tuning and labor that's going to kick your a$$. Plus, if you don't really know about how turbos work and the install process, you're in for a lot more money than you originally thought...
