It probably just need a recharge. You may have a refrigerant leak also. Have it recharged and put a little leak detector in there.

Could also be a vacuum leak allowing the blend air door to hang open and mix hot air with the cold. After running it for a while, is the suction line cold and have condensate on it?

Could also be a bad TXV, can't remember if the '98s were that or CCOT.

To ressurect this. I have a similar problem but a little stranger. Occasionally air blows cold not only out of the a/c and max a/c but also the other vents! Is that normal?

And both usually blow air that is not cold most of the time. I got water in my CD player a while back and I was wondering if the entire electric system could be affected.

I'm hoping it's as simple as needing a recharge.

You probably have a plugged condensation drain. That leaves the evaporator sitting in water, which eventually spills onto the carpet, or in your case, the radio. Clear the drain. It's underhood near center of firewall, halfway down - small rubber hose the size of a thumb. Free repair.

Sorry, wasn't clear. The radio was broken by a bucket of water crashing into it (long story). It wasn't from under the hood.

I have to betray my ignorance of electronics by asking if that could be related at all to the A/C.

My air conditioning only works for 20 min. then quits. I had it recharged and has a newer evaporator core.If I shut the truck off while the ac is working it will not work when I start the truck back up. I do notice the clutch plate on the compressor stops when the ac does not work.Is it the compressor or what?
