Stock should be no more than LT or R235/75/R15 you can Squeeze 30/9.5/15's but your gonna have clearance problems turning unless you purchase aftermarket rimes with more backspacing to get the wheels farther out of your fenderwell. 235/75's are about $15 a tire cheaper than the 30's anyway. 235 is a good and common tire size.
Hope this helps

I just bought a 1999 Dakota Sport extended cab 4x4 with a 5.2L engine and 3.55 gears. The placard on the door jam mentions "215/75R15" tires, but the tires actually on the truck are 31x10.5R15LT. From Shank's post, I gather that the tires on my truck are actually bigger than R235/75/R15. To my knowledge, I don't have any rubbing/clearance problems.

What is the difference between the two sizing systems? Are the 30/31 series tires more off-road oriented? My truck will be driven on-road 99% of the time, so I don't care about off-road tire performance. I do need good traction in the snow, and even more so in the rain. Does this mean I should be looking at 215(235?)-series tires when I replace them?

daveman - you're truck is known as a "generation 3" and will take more rubber than the earlier ones. I'd recomend metric size 235 75R15's for winter use, the Goodrich AT KO's grip very well. If you get a used set of 7" factory mags (around $200) you can swap with the seasons. No need to go any skinnier, mine plows well with that combo. "Inch" sizing doesn't automattically mean offroad, the wider tires my truck came with I consider a street tread (although they'd float well over sand when bald).
