I'm sure you could clean the filter with other products, BUT K&N ONLY recommends using their cleaner to clean their filters, according to K&N the filter doesn't have to be cleaned until there is 1/8 of debris built up on the filter, that doesn't mean that it will still flow as well as when it's clean. They also say that there dirty filter will outflow a regular paper filter, BUT A clean K&N will outflow a dirty K&N filter.

I have only used the K&N cleaner and have noticed a difference in the past after cleaning it. The last time it was filthy and caused the truck to be a little sluggish. It picked up again after I cleaned the filter. That was after some offroading in some very dusty areas though.

You can also clean them with soapy water. Only let the water flow in the opposing direction of the normal air flow. From the clean side to the dirty side. This keeps you from imbedding the dirt further into the filter. You can then re oil it with WD-40. I would still recommend using the real cleaner and oil but I know people who have used the above method for years without any problems. Hope that helps!
