Message:
Just hit 500 miles on the way to work this morning. I have a 2001 DAK QC with 4.7/AWD/Auto/3.92/Limited Slip that I took delivery of on 5/2/01.

Right at the 500 mile mark, trip computer showed AVG ECO of 14.9 MPG, current MPG of 16 while driving at 60 MPH on the highway.

I did hit AVG ECO of 15.1 earlier this weekend.

Slight mods include K&N drop in (waiting on GEN II FIPK), Lund Bug deflector and vent visors (not too happy with the wind noise these produce, anyone else with the autoshade or autovent visors have this wind noise?)

First oil change will be around 800 miles, keeping to dino oil, no synthetics yet but I do have a new DAK Owner Seminar at the dealership Wednesday night, gonna ask their opinion on putting in synthetic 10w-30 for summer driving, at the 800 mile mark.

I wouldn't trust the computer that much, considering every time I completely fill up, and do regular ol' math the computer is usually about 2 MPG high.

I know others had similar experiences as me.

My 2001 qc has a best tank of 18 mpg, all freeway, no hills or traffic (pretty rare in SoCal), 3000 miles on the odo. The computer said 20.1. Typically 2 mpg high. Worst mileage around 15.

When I leave the A/C off and drive 55-75 on various freeways I get 19 mpg. When I run the A/c and have to go through town to get to the freeway then I get 15 mpg.

Averaging 15-16.

This includes fwy, stop-n-go, lots of A/C, and more than a few hard accelerations (I always find a reason to do that).

No drivetrain mods, yet - and what the hell... it's the same MPG I was gettin' in my pathetically underpowered S-10 4.3L.

Seems my reading of 16 MPG was the low for the day, on the way home, trip computer showed 19-25, AVG ECO is getting better all the time, now 15

Whats up with the added 2 miles my trip computer shows -vs- what the odometer shows, for total miles driven? Also seems the TC adds a extra 2 MPG right?

BTW, I'm running 33 PSI (when cold) for the tires and showing exactly 2000 RPM at 60, I would have thought with the 3.92 rear, at 60 MPH, I'd be turning higher RPMS with the T&H package...is everyone else at 2k RPM doing 60 (and usually being passed by everyone or having someone right on my butt)

Hey Mace,
I have pretty much the same setup as you except I have the 3.55 rear. My 2001 QC is averaging 17.5 - 18.5 mpg on the highway and around 14-15 in town. I just hit the 1,250 mile marker this weekend. Not babying or abusing it either. I still like to get up and run when I can let her loose!! All and all, I'm happy with the gas mileage (but not the gas prices) so far!

Guess I got a good overhead trip puter... my odom is usually right on and my MPG is never more than .5 off. I have measured several times.

my 98 5.2 auto RC usualy gets 13 in town and 18'ish hiway. I used to get 20 all the time, but not anymore... might be the new wider meats =]

Just my 2 cents worth. I have tested 2 tanks in a row each of 93 octane and 89 octane. With the 93 I get consistently 15 mpg around town, with the 89 it drops to 14.5 to 14.75 mpg. Dont have the overhead computer, just a maunal conversion chart. Would probably be better than what it is if not for the horrible traffic here.

The overhead computer isn't adding 2 miles or doing anything of the sort. It does not give the everage for that tank of gas, it gives an average over the past several minutes. That means that if you drive it hard for the first half of the tank and then drive it easy for the last half of the tank, it would show the mpg for when you were driving it easy, not even taking that you drove it hard earlier into consideration. It is a very accurate system and works very well. Of course you would get a different reading if you did the math yourself after filling up. If you think abaout it, what good is that? Lets say you did drive it hard then easy. All you are calculating is what you got out of that tank, not what you were getting while driving it hard or driving it easy. I hope all of this made sense.

I have 4000 miles on my QC 4.7/Auto/3.55 and my mileage (doing the math) has been 16.6 - 17mpg city and 19.3-19.7mpg highway(checked it three tanks), a/c on and cc on 73-74mph. I have no mods yet but plans are- synthetic oils(next oil change), K&N(on order), flowmaster(in the garage waiting for trip to muffler shop) and tonneau cover(when the funds are good). If mileage improves at all, I will be pleased. My worst mileage was first tank when I was stomping the loud pedal 2-3 times per day for a whole tank and it still got 16.0 mpg.

My dash board odometer was two miles less than the overhead odometer since the day I picked up my new truck...it showed 4 miles and the overhead showed 6 (and I'm not talking the dash trip odometer.

I don't have the manual handy but I just filled up the tank, and reset the overhead Miles Driven or odometer reading and my AVG ECO jumped from 15 to 18.9 and remained constant for a 30 mile trip...tell me again what the overhead AVG ECO is measuring or averaging?

Thanks

I don't know why the overhead shows 2 miles on the odometer more than the dash. Every one that I have seen does the exact same thing until you reset it for the first time. Maybe they do something at the factory that adds the 2 miles. Programming? When I was talking about the overhead not adding 2 miles on my previous post I was talking about 2 mpg, not 2 on the odometer. As far as what the avg eco is measuring, read my pevious post.

I went out to my truck and got the owner's manual.

There are 4 overhead console readouts that are resettable: ODO, AVG ECO, ECO, and ET

AVG ECO averages your MPG since last reset, same for the other 3: readouts are since last reset.

ECO (instantaneous Fuel economy) is a average of the last few seconds, DTE (distance to empty) uses MPG for the last few minutes to show estimated distance with the remaining fuel

I got a nice afternoon trip coming up to drive to a shop and install a A.R.E. LSII Tonneau cover with sport wing on my DAK QC (got a decent price: $880 painted to match and install for both cover and wing)...gonna reset the trip computer each way and see how much it matches up for both parts of the trip...

AVG ECO is average MPG since last reset.

I keep track and reset the computer at every oil change. I, also, manually check economy with my "fuel fill-up tally book" and the computers AVG ECO is always "dead-nuts" on.

I have a '02 QC, 4.7L, 3.55 and get 17.5mpg city. On a recent trip from VA to FL and back, towing a 3500# tent camper, averaging 70mph, I got 15.9mpg.

What are you guys doing, to only get less than 15mpg?

rlloyd,
there is a big difference in MPG between a 2WD & a 4x4. I am assuming you have a 2WD. I get around 15.1 overall avg. On straight highway trips MPG is around 17.5.

I'm sure there is a lot of difference between the 4x4's and 2x4's. I was getting about 16 mpg stock and now I'm getting about 14 with 33's. Maybe my foot is too heavy!

truck could be getting 10 mpg and I'd be happy considering former nissan 4x4 V6 was getting 9-10 mpg ( auto non OD, 4.62 gears stock with 33's)

My 2000 QC gets about 20.5mpg on the highway going no faster than 70. I am using 0W30 Amsoil synthetic with an Amsoil foam filter. The biggest improvement was received when I put on a bed cover (about 2mpg). Other than that the truck is a stock 4.7.
