Subject: Help!! my new wheels dont fit.
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 four wheel drive Durango and I just bought a set of MB Motoring 20"x10" rims w/285/50/20 Goodyear gt2 tires. When I turn the front wheels the tires rub @ both the front and rear of the fender well. I have seen other Durango owners running these tires and I wonder how they fit them. I am considering cranking my torsion bars up 1" or maybe trimming in my fender well. My new tires measure 31.2" and my old 31s measured 30.4". Any suggestions on how to make these tires fit would be appreciated. Will a 1" torsion bar lift help? Thanks for the help.

i dont think it is the diameter of the tire that is the problem, it is the fact that they are so much wider, you went from an 8 inch width to ten in the wheel, im sure your tire got at least two inches wider too. why would you want 20's on a 4x4 anyway? not planning on going offraod very much are you.

Try bringing it up with the torsion bar, recently raised mine inch and a half, might be enough for you. GasHog - wider rims make tires wider ? Only at the bead, doesn't sound like that's where he's rubbing.

Maybe those other Durangos have a 2 or 3 inch body lift. ??? You could pay about $200 bucks to buy one and install it yourself or pay 6-700 and get one installed for you and that'll cure you problem reall quick.

Kowalski, i didnt say that, if you would have read everything you would have got my point.

he is running a much wider tire if you do the calcs, and rubbing at the front and back of the well can be caused by wider tires, when he turns the wheel they stick out that much further.

Aren't the gt2 tires low profile?? Why would anyone put 20" wheels and low profile tires on a 6000+ lb suv?? Not only does it look goofy, it ain't safe. Don't take any sharp turns too fast or you'll be messing up those wheels.

You could also post this message on www.durangoclub.com. They also have a forum and you don't have to worry about getting flamed by a bunch of immature punks. I know of at least a couple of guys over there running 20's.

I think gashog got it right the tires sound to wide. I would try lifting with the torsion bars but I dont know that it would help all that much. Don't let these guys bring you down, I think that 20's on a 4x4 look damn good. If I didn't use mine off road I would probably think about it. Bye the way "WTF" some of todays low pro's are designed for suvs and trucks.

I have a 99 2WD Durango with 275/60-17's. I tried my best to find rims that were as close to the original wheels' (15x7) backspacing and offset as possible. My backspacing ended up being, IIRC, about 1/2" less than stock, which pushed the wheel OUT towards the fender. I still had a slight rubbing problem, but a trip to the alignment shop fixed that up. Usually with those 20's they got the wheel all jammed as far up into the wheel well as they can get so the whole wheel/tire assembly is actually sitting further IN the wheel well than stock.

It took some work but I finally got the front wheels to fit. I ended up cranking the torsion bars up about 1" and I did some major trimming in the weel well. I took it for a test drive and it doesnt seem to be rubbing. I am getting a front end alignment tomorrow, and after that I am going to put the 20S back on.I am only going to run these wheels in the summer because we get a lot of snow in northern PA but thats why I have a 4wheel drive. Thank you for the help and I should have pics up on dodge world this weekend or early next week. The truck is under dodgeondubz.

Hmmm, case in point. A know a guy at work who put 20" wheels and lo pro tires on a Jeep grand cherokee and guess what?? Last week he cracked a wheel. Why you ask?? He hit a pot hole at about 50 mph. Those lo pro tires didn't have enough meat to absorb the impact from a 5000 lb truck. A Durango is heavier. Not saying this will happen to you but you're setting yourself up for potential problems. Big wheels, lo pro tires look good and are ok on a lot of vehicles. But not SUVs.

The overall size of the tire is probably helping contribute to your rubbing problem.

The stock tire on the Dakota R/T is 28.04" in diameter and 10.03" wide. I know the Durango R/T tire is slightly larger but not by much. The 20" tire you purchased is 31.22" in diameter and 11.2" wide - significantly larger for the smallish wheel well in a Durango.

bro I put those exact tires on my 2002 4x4cc and the only time they rub is when I go in reverse but it is only on the right side and you can hardly notice. I am thinking about just cutting a little of the front plastic and that should take care of it.

Casey....If it is only happening in reverse, I would suggest you get your alignment checked. Most shops check for free, or <$20 in my area. I've had mine checked on my 92 Dakota about a half-dozen times. It has never needed an adjustment. My Durango on the other hand (same front end setup as your '02 Dak), has needed adjustments atleast twice so far. I believe it needs another one as we speak (dang curbs!). Check that alignment before you start cutting!!
