The Emission Maintenance Reminder System (EMR) is incorporated into the engine Powertrain Control Module (PCM). On 1989 to 1995 models, the Chrysler Diagnosis Read-Out Box II (DRB II) is required to reset the EMR. If you have an 88 keep serching b/c the solution is much easier.

I discovered this answer on a recent search (Mar2008), but print it and take it to the mechanic with you. After years of ignoring my light, my local 5 STAR service people said they didn't know jack about an "old" Dakota. I took three of thier stars when I left!

I had a 90 Dak and my Maint required light came on
at 70k if I remember right.. Anyway I asked the
stealership if they would reset it. They said,
"sure, but it will cost you 90 bux" I told them
to stick it and found a HONEST local guy that did
it for NOTHING. It took him less than five
minutes with a hand held unit. I gave him 20 bux
for his trouble anyway.

92 Dakota, you have to find a honest (and that's
hard to do these days) guy to reset it for you.
FORGET the stealership, all they care about is
ripping you off.

I know that on my 2001,

un hook the negative battery cable.
Turn the key to 'on' for a few seconds
replace negative battery cable

Always works.

Whatever set your light off, may come back however if you haven't taken care of the problem.
