Subject: rear-end moaning
IP: Logged

Message:
I have recently noticed a moaning sound coming from the rear-end of my 2000 auto 4x4 CC when I make slow sharp turns. I am at 30K and haven't done any service to it yet. I am just wondering if there is something I should do to help this go away? It is noticable when turning into parking spots and other slow (5-10mph) turns. Any info would be helpful.

Just asking.

No, good observation though. It's just seems to be coming from the rear-end of the vehicle... very annoying.

Mine was doing that about the same time, the rear end needed the fluids changed. ...about 100 bucks at the dealer. No more noise.

I'm going to have the rear-end fluid changed over to synthetic to see if that fixes it. The dealer reccomended switching the rear axle to sythetic and swap the front axle with standard fluid ($219). Why not synth in the front? he just said it wasn't neccesary. Also wondering if it's bad to just have the rear done at Oil Can Henry's for $45? Switched with Castrol synthetic... just wondering, I haven't drained a rear diff before and don't know what it entails to do swap myself. Any info helps, thanks.

If you are going to switch over to synthetic
fluids buy the AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90 and take
that to your mechanic and have him use it instead
of the CASTROL.

You will be GLAD you did !!

I have a 2000 Dakota with 38K miles and 9.25" 3.55 LSD rear end and I noticed that the rear end was making noise when I was traveling slow. It would make the noise when driving straight or making turns. There was no noise at higher speeds (>30mph).

I switched out my fluid with 75W90 and added a bottle of the LSD additive and its still making the noise. However, it is only making the noise when going straight at speeds less than 30mph and making right turns, making left turns there is no noise to be heard.

I did do some figure 8's in a parking lot after adding the fluid but its still there. Is there any break-in period needed for the new fluid? I am afraid that perhaps my LSD may be going out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well I finally got it fixed and its pretty scary. I could not explain why the noise would go away after accelerating, reversing, or moderate to hard stopping.

I had my dad drive my truck and I rode in bed and after listening to the rear end I could tell that the noise was definitely coming from the left side of the rear of the truck. I decided to take that wheel off and see what was wrong.

I got ready to remove the wheel and I noticed that four of my six lug nuts were hand loose. I tighted them all up and sure enough that solved the problem. I checked the other three wheels and they were all properly tightened.

I am glad I took the time to find this now because if i waited much longer I may have ended up seeing my tire pass me by while on the highway.

I had my tires replaced about 750 miles ago and wonder whether the guys at the shop left them loose on that tire or if someone did it purposely....

Thinking about just doing the rear-end synthetic change over myself, so as I understand it I will need 1. synthetic fluid (75W90) 2. LSD Additive 3. a gasket for rear diff. How much fluid do I need to buy?

Also still wondering why the dealer reccomended standard fluid in front axle instead of synth?

Just my 2 pennys worth but I would use a good conventional 75w90 and add 2 bottles of mopar friction mod.Synthetic is too slick and I know what you are saying that all the big time racers use the synthetic,,But they make a few runs like 10 or so and they change it.
You will get better performance out of your LSD if you use the conventional oil with 2 bottles of the mopar friction mod.
I had a 94 z28 lsd that I smoked the cluch packs using the synthetic.
Like I say just my 2 pennys.
And I'Am sure I will get some replys on this.

If the synthetic isn't good for the rear-end, then why do so many people go with that? just asking as I always thought synthetic was the best way to go as a general rule. I am thinking of putting synthetic in my truck as well, and hadn't heard any negative feedback. thanks

Ever heard of more not being better.
You want to give the cluch pack as much grip as you can,That's why you use 2 bottles of mopar friction modifier.
With a LSD.
