I was wondering if anyone knew how to or what to buy to turn back my mileage on my 99 dakota.It has a digital read out.I am trying to trade it in for a new Dakota but they arent giving me any money for it because I just it 90k on it.Any idea would help greatly .Thanks again

they should still be able to tell appox how many miles are on it by your VIN and service records

KovxR6 is right, it is illeagal, also when you register, or reregister your truck you give them your mileage on the truck and the VIN number. Thos records can be pulled up and that equals more trouble the worth for you.

hey, check out ebay, theres auctions for dakota odometers that have really low miles, around 250-300 bucks. hope i helped

Since you aren't adverse to criminality, I suggest you drive down a quiet road and torch it. Collect the insurance money and maybe even fake a personal injury. Sue somebody for your pain and suffering and buy the vehicle of your dreams.
Or you could try selling privately, since dealerships are in business to make money and always try to make at least 2 grand on every used vehicle they sell. This being the case you can figure in whatever they offered you plus 2 grand on a private sale.
And for those who don't know, under OBDII, the VIN and odometer reading are stored in the PCM. Only a dealer with a DRBIII Scan Tool can change the relevant information. Aside from the legal and moral implications, how would you feel if you bought a vehicle that had the odo rolled back because some punk wanted to get more money on trade?
I think you're scum for even thinking about it but you're really stupid scum for asking.

so i could buy and install a used PCM/ECM with lower mileage from a junkyard or ebay? and a possable used gauge cluster w/ odometer from the same vehicle? all i would need to do is swap it out?

It doesnt matter what your odometer reads, a dealer will find some way to hose you. Trust me I sold new cars for 2 years.
