Subject: K&N Crankcase Vent Filters

Anybody out there had any personal experience w/ those cute little K&N chromed Crankcase vent filters as a replacement for your oil cap or stock PCV valve. I just thought it would be a nice touch under the hood next to my conical K&N filter intake. A friend of mine had one on his new Mustang as an oil cap. Any help would be greatly appreciated (part numbers, seen them done before) I have a 95' 2.5.

Sure, I put one on my 1989 Dak 4x4 3.9L. K&N really doesnt make any that are made for that year Dakota, I had to telephone them and speak to a sales rep. He asked me for the diameter of the hole in the valve cover, and promptly asked me if I wanted a black one or a chrome one. He gave me the part number (I forgot it and didnt write it down) and I did a special order through Kragen/Checker Auto. About $18. They look cool, much better than those lame crap-o-la stock things!

As for performance, I already have plent of engine mods on my truck, and any little 1/2 horsepower that could be gained went unnoticed. But they look cool and dont cost much! Also, peace of mind knowing that area of the crank is seeing good airflow and clean air. It could also take away your emissions eligibility. My county doesnt do emissions!!!! ha ha ha ha!

Thanks for the input Ryan!! So you replaced the factory PCV valve and the "lame" tubing that attaches to it with the little K&N filter? That is what I'm talking about. K&N needs to know the diameter of the "hole" in the valve cover and possibly how much "headroom" the filter can have, correct?? I also don't have any emission testing in FL so I'm down for any modification even if it is only a 1/2 horsepower! If nothing else like you said, they look great (the chromed ones)

Add to the questions.....once you installed the filter, how did you plug the hole in the intake tube? Looking for the best way.

Here is what I did: I took off the whole stock air intake box and threw it away! I put on a Mr Gasket round aluminum air cleaner holder, fitting nicely over the throttle body system, with a K&N open air element as my intake. The Mr Gasket came with the top circular aluminum piece, which fit nicely over the top.

There used to be an ugly hose that extended out from the crank case breather up to the air intake system. Not any more. You dont need that anymore since K&N filter draw in their own air. The other end of the black hose used to go up into the stock air intake system. That was plugged up with some old gunk, some black insulation that was provided when I bought my JET Stage II chip. That's it!

The stock crank case breather is supposed to draw in its air from the old stock air box. However, with the new K&N open air element filter sitting on top of my throttle body injectors, the new K&N crank case breather doesnt need it anymore. It sucks in its own air.

All the mods done on my truck are posted at:

I also have some factory tubing coming from my valve cover in two places; one with my PVC valve and one by the firewall that goes to the same place; the intake area below the throttle body. What should I do since I don't have a setup like the 3.9 with a circular filter, etc.
