Subject: 2001 4.7 First Oil Change
IP: Logged

Message:
My new 2001 4.7 DAK QC is 15 days old, about 440 miles. My dealer called to see how it was doing and suggested at the rate I'm putting miles on, to come in at 1 month for the first oil change (putting on miles slowly)....will be around 800 miles at that point.

He said they would take out the 5w-30 and put in 10w-30, especially with summer (in NY) coming soon.

Re: synthetics, he said to wait a bit more for proper seating of all engine parts before switching. I have a DAK seminar at the dealership, will ask the Service Mgr for his opinons re: the above, but does the above sound right to all of you?

Thanks.

From what I have been told they come with Mobile 1 Tri-synthetic from the factory in them. All 6 dealerships here sell that oil in the parts depts and that is what they use for changes that they do. I would wait until 3000 miles for that first change and do it every 3000 miles. As far as they weight, I run 10w-30 year round but I am in Florida so for you, the 10w would be ok in the summer and probably the 5w in the winter. As far as synthetics in general, the only negative things I have heard and read about them is the price and the fact that they lube so well that they can find their way into places regular oil cant and leak. But that is mainly on higher mileage engines. The Mobile 1 Trisynth is a blend of part synth and part regular oil. Only 440 miles in 15 days! Wow! I put on about 270 every 5 days! Your lucky.

Not to argue or anything, but Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic is 100% synthetic motor oil, no blend. Now there is a Mobil 1 Synthetic blend available too.

Quad cab, you were right. I was given some bad information. Thanks for the heads up. The tri synth is a blend of 3 different sythetic compounds.

Just did my 1st oil change today too at 1K. Will continue on at the 3K intervals from here on out. My dealer did not recommend one way or the other synthetics and said he wanted me to make up my own mind on that. Seemed to be good people at the service department at least. They took the time to prevent the oil from draining on top of the skid plates as this can make you think you have an oil leak for weeks even when you don't!!! Will probably be switching over to Mobil 1 at around the 7K mark.

Yeah, tell me more about this deal with the skid plates. I have them on my truck. I changed the oil myself and damn! what a mess. The stream of draining oil totally overshoots the opening in the skidplate. It has holes so the oil dripped out, but slowly. I couldn't think of how to deflect it.

Also, when I took off the oil filter, the same thing happened. There's going to be oil all over the underside, attracting sand and grit and making things miserable.

Just what can be done? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Dan,
The mechanics at the dealership tore up and folded strips of cardboard to act as a slide/deflector to keep the oil from collecting on the skid plates. They just slid the pieces up through the drain access holes so the oil could not drip back/down onto the skid plates. Seemed to work for them. Hope this helps!

I made my first oil change a switch to Mobil1 synth after a few thousand miles. I took the front skid plate off before draining and removing the filter. The filter made a mess when it came off, even thogh I let it drain from the pan for 15 minutes first. I heard they used to be angled a little more in past years(?). From the looks of it, trying to drain while the skid plate is on would be a pain, especially trying to get the pan's screw back in. Not much room inbetween them.

Hey Guys, Newbie(sort of) here,

Summit Racing sells Fumoto Oil Drain valve w/nipple for 19.95, replaces stock drain plug.

Connect hose to nipple, no muss, no fuss, you'll like it. Be sure to get correct thread size.

Tried to post this before, if dupe, sorry.

Yeah - those things work great. It would be perfect if you have the skid plates. Hell, it makes it easy even if you dont have the skid plates. A friend of mine has one on his F-250 4x4.

Most of the accelerated wear and tear that takes place dureing breakin is done around 500-800 miles. I normaly recommend that people change their oil at 600 miles and again at 2000 miles. These accelerated oil chages prevent15-40 micron size particles from embedding into your bearings, cycliner walls and cam lobes. Then after this if your are useing a decent filter, synthetic oil and drive at least 20 miles oneway each day you can easily go 5000 miles between oil changes. Ater your intial break in partical size will decrease to about 5-20 micron average size. Synthetic is alot better then regular oil but if you are changeing it every 3000 miles and are not abuseing your engine conventional oils can give excellent results. The filter you use is a little more important then the oil you use; assumeing that you use an API approved oil and an aproved grade and viscosity for your engine.

I received free oil change (also first oil change) recently from dealer. I thought pressure was a little high. After I got home discovered they had put in about a quart too much. I drained to proper level and pressure is, if anything, higher. Any clues?
