Today I filled up the tank. The warning light was on for miles and the needle was on "E". I was able to put only 17 gallons of gas in. My Dak has a 24 gallon tank so that means there must have been 7 gallons of gas in there.

Is the high reserve just to keep the fuel pump from burning out? Seems to me there could be a lot of crud in there if I'm constantly holding at least 7 gallons of gas.

I guess the gas gauge just provides a rough guestimate about how much gas there is.

Would it be a bad idea to fill a jerry can and drive until it dies?

Not a good idea. From what I understand, the fuel lubricates the fuel pump and keeps it from burning up=big dollars.

Yea, I have the same dam problem. Dodge tells me that this is "normal". I say B.S. I have a 02 Tahoe and it's gage is dead accurate. Personally I think that Dodge has a design mistake and refuses to acknowledge it and fix it. I drive a lot of hiway miles and stopping to put in half a tank of gas stinks. This is the last Dodge that I will buy. Oh, bye the way. the Dakota has a 22 gal tank, not 24. If you have something else, sorry.

QCs have a 24 gallon tank.

Why does everyone complain about the gas guage being set how it is? If you need to run it down all the way to E which is kinda silly, set your trip when you fill up and and run X miles from when the light comes on accoring do your mileage and the amount left in the tank when the light comes on.

This is a normal thing that happens. The tank is designed that way for the fuel pump. And also if you crawl underneath your truck you will see why. One end is deeper then the other. Dont worry about it.
