Subject: V6 Dakota Rear End Noise

Hello -

I tried to post once but didn't see it come up. Sorry if I double post. This is my first time posting, but thank you for all the good advice I've read here.

I have a 2000 V6 4x4 club cab automatic. The problem that I now have is a high pitched rear end noise (whine) that happens when I'm on the gas between 35-55 mpg (that's when it's the worst) and I can't figure out what it is. I've had a mechanic put it on a lift and it happens there too, which leads me to believe it's something other than tire/wheel bearing noise. I had the pinion bearings replaced in the rear diff but that didn't help. I think that it is something in the diff - they told me they heard something using a stethoscope.

Any ideas? I've had bad luck just blanketly taking dealer advice, so I'm trying to do as much research as I can. Thanks!!!
