Is it a good idea to pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank every coupla months or is this stuff just a gimmick ?

If it's a good idea, what brand would you suggest ?

I have found that the good cleaners (the $6-20 ones) seem to help while the cheaper ones do not. Some say yes, some say no... On my various trucks I have always had good results but this does not equal a professional cleaning either...

I would not use fuel injector cleaner. What it does is
break up the sediment in your injectors, but it doesn't
break it up into fine enough pieces to have it shoot out
of the injector. Best thing to do is try and do it yourself
(depending on your state laws). Or have it done at Jiffy
Lube or something.

While it may work partially, the problem is that anything strong enough to really clean your injectors would eat the varnish off the windings in your fuel pump. That's why it's best to have it done professionally. At my shop, I disconnect the fuel system in the vehicle and loop it (dumps right back in the tank). I then run the vehicle off my fuel in a stand-alone machine that's mixed with a VERY aggressive cleaner & pressurized to 30-60 psi (depending on the vehicle I'm servicing). For a V6 or 8, it takes about 20 minuites while 4 cylinders can take up to 45 minuites to burn the 16-24oz of fuel.

And you can really smell the sheit that comes out the pipe when we're done... it friggin' stinks! Does it work? Yes. I've had vehicles fail emissions tests due to carbon build-up in the cylinders (high peak pressures forming oxides of nitrogen). Running the injector system, then 4 litres of water (about a gallon) through a small vacuum line gets the intake and injectors all freshened up.

I've read that any kind of fuel additives can shorten the life of your O2 sensor as well.
Last time I had my injectors out I sprayed them with some carb cleaner. I figure that's the best they've ever been cleaned. ;)

I've had good luck with injector cleaners. If you get the ones that are $5 or more, those seem to work better.

I had an older car that ran rough and needed new injectors. After a tank or 2 of injector cleaner, it started running a lot smoother. Can't say if it was bad for the car or not, but it sure did work... used cleaners in that car for about 5 years without a problem.
