Subject: ATF in Engine - Accident
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, call me a stupid idiot. I accidently put about 1/4 quart of ATF in my engine. Will this damage my engine. I remember when I was a kid my grandpa saying they used to put ATF in an engine to clean it, like a heavy detergent. But I don't really know if that was truth or myth. Do I have to dump the oil and filter? ..... or do I have nothing to worry about? Thanks for your help.

Well back in grandpa's day trany fluid was a combination of straight cut 5W oil, whale oil esters and detergents. You could add it to an engine to cleran it out. Since grandpa's prime things have changed a bit. Motor oils are base so that their ph will nuetralize acid formation. Trany fluids on the other hand are acid based. Motor oil today has very little wax in it compared to 20 years ago while trany fluid still has alot of parafin in it. 1/4 is not going to kill your engine but it is going to degrade the oil faster. You will want to change your oil and filter at your next payday if you can not do it right now. You might also get some additional foaming but doubt it seeing how you just added 1/4 of a quart. I know guys that still add 1/2 quart of (synthetic)trany fluid to their crakcase the day before their oil change to clean it out. I doubt this works very well because trany fluid has a much lower flash point and is more volatile so you would think that it would actualy create more ash and carbon in the engine but who knows.

I've heard the same thing before, just don't know how true it is. Either way,I wouldn't leave it in there for too long....drain it,and put a new filter on it.

Sandman is correct (1/4 is not going to kill your engine but it is going to degrade the oil faster) and I will add:

You did not state which motor oil you are using. Some would hold up better than others with a little ATF mixed in. No matter which oil you used, don't worry "too" much about changing the oil right away, especially if you are on a budget. But I would shorten the next cycle to 2000 miles +/-, since what you have done will not cause you any problems. If money is no object and you are concerned, go ahead and change it out so you can sleep at night.

Putting ATF in the motor is an old timers trick and was used to clean the motor since ATF is a high detergent oil. Historically, they would put a full quart to a 5qt system and run the full drain interval of 3,000 miles (standard at that time). Motor oils are different now, and now this old trick can actually harm your motor oils capabilities, so don't do it ... and pass the word.

The properties of ATF in that small quantity aren't enough to cause it to thin out your motor oil. FOR THE RECORD, if it was a turbo of some sort ... another story ... but in a standard engine, no worries.

Ok, Thanks guys. I feel better. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal to dump it, it's just el-cheap-o dino oil. I will dump at 2,000 miles instead of my usual 2,500 miles.

In my 13B rotary, I've sprayed ATF 4 inside the engine (access through plugs) and let it sit for a couple days then started it up to remove a lot of deposits. I didn't do any compression tests, but it usually helps with this.

At Chrysler Engineering, we would put ATF in an engine to shorten down the time it took to destroy an engine. It took too long to kill an engine with engine oil in it. I would get that stuff out of the engine ASAP. ( It will also destroy the seals )

Yes, drain the dino and put in some Amsoil, forget about those 2500 mile change intervals! Let the Amsoil do the work not you.
