Make sure you get 4 wheel ABS, not just rear wheel ABS. With several bags of pea gravel in the bed, the 2WD DAK does fine in the snow.

I've driven just fine in 3-4" of snow with mine, but almost got stuck on a hill that had only an inch or so. Go figure. Just about anything other than the stock tires will make a big difference in the snow.

thanks guys i freakin hate snow. at least it's not a dosile wasteland like most people make it out to be...haha. anywho i don't have a dakota just yet but soon within the next couple months. i went to test drive it today. it was surprisingly good and it gets better gas milege then the cars i have now(cadillac sts and rx300(mums n dads))i like the dakota more then anything else i've driven including the durango the dakota feels like you can toss it more into corners n such whereas the durango you feel like you have to be careful or else your gona tip it. i drove the ram to and i find it's just to damn big. not for me. if the dakota isn't offered in burnt orange anymore i'm going with light blue. it will definately be a manual. post your opinions :)

mario: It's supposed to be a CAR not an AIRPLANE!...{OOPS, wrong Mario.} :) Anyway, "Amber Fire Pearl Coat" was last made in 2000, I believe. Pull up Amber Fire in the archives for photos. Bed weight is the deal with pickups in the snow. Good mud and snow (M&S rating) tires are a plus, great on the highway, too. Some tire brands are more aggressive to M&S, others to highway tread. Limited slip/Posi/Sure-grip rear end is worth its weight in gold, if 2WD. 2001 RC Motorsports/4.7/5-spd/3:92/posi

My father has lived in Minnesota his entire life and has gone without 4x4 just fine. Right now he has a small mazda pickup (4x2), and with a few sandbags in the back it does just fine with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tires.

Dudes,
Here in Little Rock, we had a little snow this winter (about a foot one time) and there was 4" on the interstate. I had a set of KUMHO like rain tires that had really big tread grooves that had really great handling and braking in the packed snow, but only some worn out 245/50's on the back WITHOUT LSD!!
I was round the curve in the interchange from 167 S into I-30 W at about 55 or 60 and the rear tires let go!!!
I let the video games take over and performed a picture-perfect drift for what seemed like an eternity, (probably 80 yds. @ 55 mph on snow!!) and thanks to the quick-tight steering rack and pinion on the 4.7 L CC I was able to maintain a perfect slide and didn't have to mess with calling a wrecker or a 4 wd.
That same night I got stuck on a freakin hill with less than 1" of snow on it with the one wheel wonder CRAP.
That drift was sweet and I wish I had some pics or video fer sure!

haha ur insane. you based whether you live or die on the knowledge you gained from a video game?!?!?! YES!!! for all you parents out there....SEEEEE these video games aren't just a huge-ass waste of time... THEY CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!!! now i feel like playing 4x4 off road to see how high i can launch the dakota through the air in 2wd!!! i'd have to say that thats the most realistic game in terms of handling in trucks!!! anyway whats the gas milege you guys have seen on your dakotas??? anything above 16mpg???

Where the heck is Sudbury??
Right on with the whole "launch the dak idea"!!!

I can get avg. 17 with mixed driving and some heavy-footed stuff , and at best 21 on the hi-way.

-------------------------------------------------
2001 4.7 CC 5 spd, Custom-CAI, IAT Relocation+ Adjuster mod, TB Spacer (will benefit nitrous in the future setup), Soon to install Stone-Mtn. Headers and custom 2.5" downpipes into a 3" collector w/custom dump just 6" past where the downpipes meet with a wing-nut cover for street-legal reasons, and a 3" single exit Dynomax with a turndown just befor the rear axle for futur C-notch and axle clearance reasons.

Hope the exhaust turns out like I expect; the dump should prove on the dyno to add a considerable gain over stock AND cat-back systems on the track.
Haven't run er' yet, still waiting to put in the Trac-lok, then maybe I'll run the 1000 ft. It should be pretty quick!

Sudbury -- home of the Wolves!

/OHL hockey fan

Put about 210 lbs of sand in the back, make
sure you have a GI folding shovel and some
gloves and the normal Winter stuff, and you'll
be fine. I drove my 2wd in all kinds of snow
and only got a little stuck once -- in a drift that
was taller than the tires were high. And I was
able to rock my self out. Dakotas are quite
good in the snow.

I lived in Albany NY for 2 years with a 2WD Dakota. Moved to Cleveland this year and did well again.

I have a set of Bridgestone Winter Duelers and keep about 300-400lbs of sand on top of the wheel wells.

I am about to switch my summer tires (255/65/15 Eagle LS) for a more reasonable all-season tire. If anyone wants to buy my Winter Duelers (still 12/32 tread left) mounted on wheels, drop me a note.

I never had any problems with my 2wd when i lived closer to work. When my commute was 10 miles in 15 minutes 2wd was fine for me. I recently moved 45 miles from work. I jsut bought a 4wd so that the long trips home in the snow are not so white knuckle... Especially when I would get close to home and tried to climb the 6-8% hills by my house.... Even the 400# and the lsd was not enough some days...

I'm in Rochester, NY. My 2000 QC is a 2WD and with 200lbs of gravel in the rear of the bed beside the tires I was ok on all-season tires with a bit of wear on them, only slid when I wanted, or if I hit some ice. When I took out the gravel then another snow hit, it was awful, I felt like I was on ice every time I went around a curve. Could've been the tires, but I got the thing in November, so there was snow on the ground when I got it up to Rochester from home (Cleveland, TN). I think with better tires I woulda been fine, at least with the weight in the back.

I had a 2wd dakota in rochester, ny as well. I was attending RIT at that time. The weather up there can get quite...bad. My dak when it was stock, did ok. After lifting it and adding a locker with bfg mud terrains, it didn't flinch ;)

(mine was the amber fire pearl colored dak)
