Subject: Manual Trans 03 V8 clicking/thud noise
IP: Logged

Message:
Whenever I change gears I hear one click... I can make
the same noise just by pushing in the clutch. Its loud
enough to be annoying. Also if I am at a light and my
lane moves up I can come to a stop and listen as a thud
emerges from the rear of the truck.Equally annoying.
Takes about 2 seconds for that to happen after I stop.

I was told by the dealer this was normal LOL! I think
they were jst too lazy to fix it and this has happened
many times to me and other people.

Anyways does this happen to anyone else? This never
happened in any other manual I have ever driven.

I have an 01 QC 4.7 5spd manual

I've never had any noises like that.

It does NOT sound normal, and yes, I know that's why you posted it here.

NO idea really what it might be.

Maybe some of our 03 manual breathren will post up.

Do you have the heavy duty transmission?
I have that on my automatic. changing from neutral to drive there is about 20 fast clicks and then a sound like something locking. my guess was a spline gear on the tranny locking in to place.

I'll turn the radio down and have a listen on my drive home and let you know. Usually the only click I sometimes hear when I push the clutch is from my ankle.

I think I do have the heavy duty transmission. I will
certainly look into that tonight. But in either case it just
doesn't sound right to me.. the truck has 5.7k on it
already and it should be broken in at least half way. I
noticed the sound as soon as I drove away from the
dealership.

Changed oil after 1k then 3k. next change is 6k which
will be this weekend. I haven't found any large parts in
the oil I have drained. So its not the engine. Although I
am going to look into the Idle Air Control motor/valve. I
have rough idle all the time. Anyone else have this
problem also?

Well no clicking from the truck or the driver. There is a faint click from the clutch pedal when I engage or disengage it, but I don't think that is what you were talking about.

no rough idle either

Mine has always idled poorly. Lean sputter, not very smooth.

I get that "thump from behind" when that long unbaffled gas tank is between 7/8 and 3/4 full everytime I stop.

While we're mentioning it-rough idle that is

My 01 4.7 QC 5spd manual, has always idled smooth as silk.

I've seen all the posts about the 4.7, and rough idle, and some possible solutions.

Is this with the auto trannies, or does anyone with the manual have this rough idle problem too.

I ask, cause if it's the manual too, I'll take better notes on how to fix it.

Try this,

Put a 2x4 on the garage floor in front of the
front tire. Start the truck and in 1st gear slightly
start to release the clutch moving the truck up
against the 2x4.

As soon as you can feel the truck moving
against the block (don't drive over the block),
push the clutch in quickly. You'll probably hear
a clunk.

Is that the sound you're hearing? If so, it's
"normal" gear back lash in the trans and rear
end. The way-too-flexible two piece driveshaft
carrier bearing just magnifies the entire mess.

I swear I've fixed at least a half dozen different
clunks, squeeks, pops, etc. since I bought my
Quad new about 1 1/2 years ago.

Hope this helps,
Lemmers

Oh, btw, my '02 idles smooth as silk, although
a little too low for my tastes. (knocking on
wood)

My 03 has the same poping nosie you are describing.

When I am coming to a stop light, I will put it in Neutral (5-Speed) and let go of the clutch as I am rolling to a stop. Then after I am completly stopped, after about 3 seconds, with only the brake pressed I hear a clunk from what seems to be the rear of the truck.

However, it also happens if I have the clutch down, and in gear, when stopped too.

I figured I would give it some time before I brought it up to the dealer.

Great Forum.. lots of info... I feel oddly better that other
people are having these problems. So I am assuming
that from Lemmers comment we need to replace the
"two piece driveshaft carrier bearing"? I am also
assuming this has to do with the play in the driveshaft
itself. I have been under this thing and moved the
driveshaft about 1/2 to 3/4 inch both ways. I don't
remember it ever being like that on my Trans AM.

Anyways, yes the manuals have a problem with idle
speed. I have dealt with 2 dealships in the Maryland
area and none of them want to do any work... why are
these guys gettin paid?

I think I am going to call Chrysler and make a deal with
them and have them pay if I can get another shop to
diagnose the problem and repair the problem.

Here is the email address to complain: http://
www.chrysler.com/ Click on the contact us link and click
the customer service link.

Then you will get a reference number through email.
After that you can call them.

"If your concerns are still not resolved after consulting
another dealer, please contact our office at 1-800-992-
1997, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to
speak with one of our trained Agents."

I will post this in another forum probably so people
know how to complain about the 25k vehicle that runs
like a 2k vehicle.

waldo00o,

FWIW, I took a bunch of the flex out of my
carrier bearing rubber bushing by filling half of
the slots in the rubber with 1/8" acrylic that I
had cut to size, heated and bent to the proper
curve.

I just slid them into place and zip-tied them
arount the outside steel part of the carrier
bearing housing. It really seemed to tighten
things up when "getting on it" or pulling a load.

The downside is more vibration inside the
cab.

I think your fighting a losing battle. If your
really picky about things, you Dakota is going
to drive you nuts (like me). I'm learning to say,
"It's a Dodge, it makes all kinds of wierd
noises". Every day, I seem to hear or feel
some new wierd thing, it sure does look good
though!

As long as it gets me home, It's cool.

Later,
Lemmers

Yeah the truck looks real good and it has a good bit of
muscle even though its all stock right now.

Thanks for the advice Lemmer. I guess I will just try not
to void the warranty fixing all these noises. Or I will just
have to deal with it.

I too experience(d) the click when depressing the clutch pedal. It is definitely NOT coming from the engine or drivetrain because I can make the click occur with 1) the engine off and 2) the transmission in neutral. Being a fix-it-myselfer I spent a while digging underneath the dash and finally figured out what is causing the click. There is a plastic "clip" that serves as a bushing for the connection between the clutch pedal and the clutch master cylinder. It's this plastic clip that is causing the click. IF you put heavy grease on it or turn in 90 deg in relation to where it currently is the click magically goes away. I think I'll try to find some rubber tubing to replace the clip to make it permanent.

Just my .02.

I have 02 dak sxt 5 spd. I have had alot a problems with mine to, at 27k replaced cd/player and a/c panel controls. At 28k brake master cylinder was replaced engine decarb fuel system flush upper control arms and bushing had to be replaced. 30k started having the clunking and popping noises, looked at the u-joints and that seems to be the problem the rubber seals are dried and cracking bad. Im going to try and replace them myself $10 x 3 auto zone not bad, compared to quote from dealership of $150. Also found the clucking noise sounds like its coming from middle area if you open your door some around 20-30 mph slow a little press clutch it sounds almost from front. One of my motor mounts seems to be off which would cause rough idle and stress on the drive train, which caused my clutch to have abnormal ware. Other than all of that I still love the truck !!!! look great and is still the strongest, fastest, on its good days.... v6 truck Ive driven

I test drove a used 00' reg cab v6 5 spd about a month ago. The main reason i didn't buy it was because the same problems. The tranny sounded like a school bus tranny or something. Loud clicks into gear and sounded really nasty when i took off from a dead stop. I hope that if many are having this problem, dodge will have it cleared up in the next gen.

No offense guys, but one of the most frustrating facts about this website is that nobody can seem to stay on the subject. Some of us are really experiencing these annoyances and would like to fix them. Regardless of the possibility that Dodge quality may be at stake, those who are really interested have Daks and plan to keep them. The topic is manual transmission clicking and driveline thunks, don't give us a life history of all the stuff you've had fixed on your ride. With that said, I can't be the only one who's isolated this annoying click (sounds like a retractable pen) and I'm wondering if anyone else has come up with a reasonable solution. It's obvious that the plastic bushing is at fault, but heavy grease isn't so heavy after 90+ deg heat. Removing the clip all-together introduces too much slop... Take a look at the connection guys, what solution would you present?
