so yeah we are sitting here watching tv when I hear a rumble outside, too close to be passing by so I knew it was a friend. I come out of my front door and there it is.. a lightning sitting next to my r/t! It's a 2001, he paid 26k for it and it only has 1500 miles.

It's in great shape and I'm super happy for him, it's a very nice looking truck. He's a hard core ford fan so a dak wasn't an option but anyhow right in his "svt owners packet" it's rated @ 13.9 in the 1/4. So of course I'm all about thinking what I need to do to take him, I have ZERO track experience, neither does he so it will be a great learning experience. We'll be going this weekend, it rained last time I went. I rode around in it for a bit and it doesn't seem faster than my r/t but I'm pretty sure it is. I'm going to hunt down the specs for the 2001, I'm kind of glad that someone close to me has a lightning... much better than some cocky mullet on a half-shell like EVERY lightning owner I've met heh. Anyhow, I'll keep people posted on our times... judging by my setup if experienced drivers were pushing our trucks I would be close right?

also, what weakness if anything does the 2k1 lightning have and/or what are my advantages? I'm assuming weight off hand BUT my r/t's a cc and I've got the thunderform box w/ one amp in.

they are pretty fast... there weak spot is in the lower RPM's, and they respond VERRY well to mods.
it might be time to change that pulley on your blower to a smaller one ;-)

hehe I've got scott Q's 9# pulley sitting in my desk man, I'm just dreading the 370+ it's going to cost in prep work parts(head gasket, blow-off) to get it on. Hey btw, what is #1 of boost equate to as far as hp/tq gains?

I figure right now that money would be better spent on a mopar PCM along with the trans-go shift kit, adjusting my shift points and getting a 20/15 bump from the mopar pcm would serve me better than the + #3 you agree Eric?

thanks man,

not sure what 1lb= HP, i'd guess and say 10hp for every pound of boost, but weather and alt play a HUUUUUUUUUUGGGE factor in that.

its not that much do change some gaskets. i think i spent near $150 for all the gaskets, i got my bypass valve for $20, spent $30 on a 7 113.5" rib belt, and made my own aux belt tencioner for free.

but the mopar pcm and shift kit will work great too. plus, you can tell your friend "yeah, i only beat you running 6lbs of boost!" hehe

hey, wanna trade that 9lb pulley for my 11lb pulley?

how did you get the bypass valve for 20 man! I posted a thread a week or 2 ago about finding them cheaper than the powerdyne site, 179.00 is nuts. As for gaskets it's just the head gaskets right? Also, did you use a gatorback belt? If so where did you get it, I tried pep-boys & auto-zone and no dice. Why do you want to bump down to 9lb's?

i got my bypass valve off of someone here. brand new. $180??? they are out of there mind!! you can go to a audi or porche dealer and get a bosch 110 BBV for about $50-60, and it has a brass valve and holds up to boost better, so im told.

i bought a kelly springfeld belt from autozone, because they were out of stock on the gaterback belts, but they can get them.

as far as gaskets go, the headgaskets are all you have to worry about, but you have to change others to get to the headgaskets.
here is which ones you have to change and the price

intake manifold gasket...$22 (summit)
felpro headgaskets.......$60-70 (summit)
valve cover gaskets.......$13 (autozone)
ultra seal header gaskets.$20-25 (JBA)

i kinda want to switch to the 9lb pulley because my truck is racking up the miles, and im kinda worried about the rings on the pistons

Ey' eric got a link or something to a sub $80 by-pass vavle? Also, for replacing all those gaskets did you have any help/guides/etc. or did you just attack it solo one day? I'd love to replace mine, has anyone taken photos or anything of the process?

1lb of boost is usually betwee 6-7% HP increase. IE... 6 PSi on a 300 HP engine = 1.40 X 300 = 420 boosted HP. It's really an approximation, but it's actually pretty accurate.

mike, before i did the headgaskets, i put the manifold on, headers, and the 1.7 rockers. (all at differant times ofcourse)

after doing all of that, the only thing left to change the headgaskets, is to remove the power steering pump, and 10 headbolts, and the grounds on the back of the heads.

it took me 3 days, but i took the valves out and cleaned the crap out of them, and put in HD valve springs, and new valve stem seals, and also cleaned the crap out of everything. i also took a lot of breaks, ect (i was in no rush)

you MIGHT be able to do it in one day, but its going to be a LOOONNNG day! and you will be pissed off when you go to bed. LOL
