Subject: My best mod to date
IP: Logged

Message:
Not really a mod. I did the autolite plug thing and my truck ran really sh1tty and ate gas. Last week I put in a Wells ProGold cap and rotor and Bosch Platinum +2 plugs and man what a difference. AT least a 10% increase in mileage. I'm going to wait for a few more tanks of gas to go through.

When I pulled the AutoLite's they looked cold and were completely wetted out. I really don't think the AutoLite 3923 mod is very good and, for me anyway, it's filed under "urban legend".

I found that the Bosch +4's worked really well also. I have not changed my cap and rotor yet, but they made my truck run really smooth, and increased my mileage.

CThomp, check out last post on this thread;

i went with what he said. i lost a little in idle quality( i think, this thing never idled great, lean sputter?) and running cold might be a little rougher. this is normal for platinum plugs i hear. i went with platinum for convience. i drive about 28k a year and didnt want to dig into engine every 15k to get at those plugs. i went with the +4s on the off chance they might improve mpgs and performance. i think they helped my mpgs a little anyway and didnt hurt performance. been about 1500 miles no problems.

No you get a clue shiatforbrains Knowitall. Keep your piehole shut moron, you don't run platnium plugs in a 4.7 bet on it. You do need a dopeslap, FYI Platinum plugs will destroy the individual coils in the 4.7 motor, next time Blowitall STFU because you don't know jack.

Hey crapdown, I've had platinum plugs in my 4.7 for the last year and a half. When are my coils going to get blown? When you come over and wrap your lips around them? That is if you can get them off you daddies peenis.

You really need to get a friggin clue and try things for yourself before you swallow every bit of disinformation posted by evey Tommy Turd. But I know a fella like you likes to swallow every bit you can so...

jay-
i've had the 3923's in for 17,000 miles now and they run great. didn't pick up any horsepower but they evened out the rough idle when coupled with the borg warner select cap and rotor. all told it's about 20 bucks for them all and takes roughly an hour to install and helps with mileage

A friend of mine has a 2000 RT. He runs the Bosch Platinum +4's with a Jacobs coil. He claims it helped his gas mileage quite a bit. Personally myself, I use the Autolite 3922's. The 3922's when I read the plugs are the right heat range for this truck. 3923's are a little on the hot side. I grind down the ground electrode to expose the center electrode. Just bend up the ground electrode with a pair of plyers and grind back the necessary amount with a bench grinder. Bend back and set gap. The spark is now exposed like any of the performance plugs you pay 3-5 dollars a piece for. The only performance plugs I ever used was a set of Rapidfires. Good plug.

Ive been using autolites for over a year in a half. 3923s with a supercharger and without, I would only change over to 2 step colder NGK plugs 6097's. I have heard really good things about those. But im using them for nitrous now so one step colder would be best. NGK or autolite are the two best plugs in my opinion. DONT use platinum plugs though.

Platinum plugs are the real urban legend. Only good points on them are that they don't have to be changed as much. And the platinum plugs with aftermarket ignition is a BIG no no. Just ask the ignition manufacturers. I've ran the Platinum+4s in my R/T, and to tell you the truth, I noticed no difference with them. Changed then out about 15K later for Autolites. I don't think the Autolites are the end all plug for our trucks either though. They are just really cheap and have good performance. Any time you change plugs, yu are going to notice a difference just because they are new plugs, and not old worn out ones. I've also used the stock Champion replacements(actually got the bvest performance from them), and the Bosch copper resistor core plugs which performaned just as good as the Autolites and were cheaper. Haven't tried the NGKs, only because every time I've gone to buy new plugs, they never have enouhg of the right ones in stock.

Do the individual coil ignitions tend to wear a plug out quicker with its higher output than a cap/rotor design. I have 30k on my 4.7 and have original plugs, Probably time to change em......
Just wonderin...
Does the 4.7's ignition design rival any aftermarket ( like MSD ) systems due to it's individual coil design?
What's the big difference, besides not having a cap and rotor to change?

I just don't under stand the purpose of having 4 electrodes, they say so the spark can take the least resistance one ! But then you have 3 others in the way to block the good spark just not good logic to me

I think that the teams of power train engineers who decide which plug an engine should have know a bit more than some greasy Joe Shadetree/pizza boy. The Autolite 3923's may do the job, I don't know. Why start experimenting with different plugs when the company that designed and built the engine says you should use a certain design and type of plug.

I think the whole myth with the Autolites is that one guy discovered they fit and convinced himself that the change was better and he was smarter than the manufacturer and it spread like Ebola throughout the internet community.

I would ask, does running a plug that is not recommended by the manufacturer void the warranty if they cause a problem? Is it worth it? Why not just stick with stock? My truck has run great for over 150,000 miles with nothing but $8.00 worth of Champions every 30,000 miles.

Very well said, HOWEVER, the TEAMS of engineers did NOT specify the proper plug to use AFTER you have modified your intake/exhaust/cams/gears/etc.

So, these GREAZY SHADETREE PIZZA BOYZ are taking up where the teams of engineers left off to discover through (most likely) trial and error and some (hopefully) knowledge to post valuable information YOU could use on these message boards.

I'm glad these message boards are here and that somebody else did these mods before me so I dont mess something up.

My 2 cents.

Don't waste your money buying performance plugs from the stealership. A set of new OE or platinum plugs will do just fine. I don't know where this myth that spark plugs make power came from.

Check out http://www.babcox.com/editorial/us/us110020.htm

This guy knows what he's talking about.
