My best advice is to buy a work car if you are going to put that many miles on it. Dakota's get poor gas mileage and are not on the economical end of the scale. I assume you get reimbursed for your mileage?

I would suggest to not buy a Dakota. Sad to say, my Dakota is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. I have been a Mopar man since 1965 when I ordered a 1966 Coronet 500 street hemi. I actually put 107,000 miles on it...and it was a performance car. Anyway, my 1999 Dakota Sport 3.9L currently has 62,000 miles on it. It has had 4 catalytic converters, 3 radio/stereos, 2 sets of leaf springs, a water pump, 2 fan clutches, a new cup holder, and a heater core. It now needs front end work (scheduled for this Thursday) because the drivers side wheel bearing is howling. I've been reading other postings about extensive front end work on this site, so I can't wait to see this repair bill. The check engine light comes on and off daily so that is getting looked at as well. The warranty was the 5/50,000 one so now I pay for all repairs. I do not "beat" the truck ever and I change the oil and filter every 2500 miles. I never realized that when I bought a yellow truck that it would actually be a real "lemon." I also have a 2001 Durango R/T and I just found a pool of power steering fluid on the garage floor from it. After owning 14 Mopars during the last 37 years, I am seriously looking at Bow-Ties.

WHY would a former 426 Hemi owner buy a 3.9 Dak?

Because this former Hemi owner purchased it for a relative and the relative passed away.

Well, I met a guy that has a 96 full size 4wd with the ORIGINAL tranny and 400,000 miles on it with no problems at all.
As far as the Dak goes, I have the same question.

But I have posted a previous reply about the 3.9 being a sorry piece of craftsmanship. BUT I havent heard about longevity of the 4.7's in the previous vehicle it was introduced in, the Cherokee.

Does anyone know??? Maybe consumer reports can help us there...

I do know the 4.7 is an upgrade from the 5.2 due to the cooling and oil passages and OHC for economy and power.

I wont touch the 5.9 / 4.7 argument, however , we do know which one will get the best mpg, but I dont know which one will last longer...

The Work Car/ geo metro idea is the best though, either way you look at it. Get a 4.7 5 spd.Dak Sport C/C :) , and take good care of it, and it'll last you a good long time, and wear out the metro..
