I have a 99 Dakota SLT 5.2 V8 w/ 75K miles. I have kept up on all maintenance to date. Recently I have noticed a lound squeaking from the drive train area when travelling from about 15 to 35 mph. After 35 mph it tends to fade away. Primarily it is when the vehicle is cold and after a while it settles down, but sometimes its all day. I can verify that it is not belt related as I performed an experiement when the sound was happening. In a controlled area, I killed all power and coasted at 30mph and the sound remained. I did not do this for long so as not to damage the trans w/out fluid pump engaged. Hade the brakes serviced. Dealership says u-joint looks fine. I am fast approaching the end of the warranty and wanted to get any thoughts.

Pretty constant squeaking while driving straight. Kind of like a VERY lound cricket with an attitude. It is not effected by turning or braking, maily just speed. I was reading a previous post on another forum and they were taking about properly dissasembling and greasing, and reassembling the u-joint. ??? The dealer said everything loked fine on that end. Don't know if I can trust that.

constant depending on speed? Does it get faster as the speed of the truck goes faster?

Does it do it if you keep the trans in either 1st or second gear?

Sounds U-Joint related. Replace them with quality, greasable u-joints.

Yes it does tend to speed up as the mph's increase and vice versa. When I get to about 35mph either it goes away, or I simply can't hear it any more due to other sounds (wind, cars etc...) at that speed. I have not tried to hear it in 1st or 2nd and I will do that ASAP. What might this tell me? Thanks for your help.

I am trying to tie it into either driveshaft speed (tires, axles, gears, u-joints, trans output shaft) or to transmission speeds (hence the 1st second gear thing). But it does sound like it could be the u-joints or the transmission tailshaft bearing.
