On 99's you have to have a scan tool to get the codes. The key trick works on 2000's and I think it works on pre-1997. If you have a local Autozone, they will scan codes for you for free. Other places may do it as well, but you will have to ask around.

If you hold in trip reset on your truck while turning on the key, it will do the gage cluster diagnostic, but that is all.

they key trick works on my 97, do all of this within 5 seconds and then watch the odometer, after the chimes stop your codes will come up, key on, key off, key on, key off, key on.......do that with in 5 seconds.... don't start the truck just power it on, then like i said after the chimes stop your odometer should show you your codes, just watch it for a few seconds, if you get code 55 it means there are no codes and all is well..........

Disconnecting the negative wire from the battery for a minute or 2 should clear the codes if you have fixed the problems. If you haven't, the codes will most likely reappear. This worked for my 2000 4.7L.

turn the ignition key on till U see the lights and back off 3 times. On the 3rd time leave the key on and look at the odometer. it should flash your codes.

on deleting the codes, the computer has a condener which holds power which saves memory, you have to drain the power. To do this and delete the codes you hae to disconnect the negetive cable, turn the key to the run position and leae it there for at least 30 sec.

The key on key off trick will NOT work on '98-'99 Dakotas. You need a scan tool to check codes on thsoe years.
