My tranny has been diagnosed with a bad valve body. I was thinking of getting an MP 500 or 518. I have an 89 Shelby Dakota with the 4spd o/d. Any advice?

If I remeber right they came with the 500, not sure about it.You can get a 500 from MP for about 1300. Pricey yes, but it's a NEW trans and to rebuild the one you have isn't really going to be much less, especially when you consider that the MP trans will have the updates in the design. I think the 518 are about 1500. Either trans you have I'd relly consider a MP unit.

As far as I know it is a 500. 1300 not pricey for a new trans. Koller Dodge lists it for 1200. Do the MP trans's have any improvements vs the stock models? Can I substitute a 518 for a 500?

Any color as to whether the MP Trans is any better than the original equipment or is it in fact a stock transmission?

Tom you need to know if your trans is a lock up unit also.I am pretty sure you have the a-500 trans. The 500 unit is a lighter duty unit but also it does not soak up as much horsepower as a 518.I do believe the MP performance units do have a recalibrated valve body. You should call MP and ask.

In my 88 dak (6er) I had an a-500 that dies. Already rebuilt it once ($1800 or so) so when it dies again (cracked case) I bought an A-518 non-lock-up version... It cost $1500 plust $250 for the convertor (high stall) and $300 for install... But it was awesome.. my only problem was that since the A-500 was lockup and this wasn't I had to wire in a switch for the OD, but on the highway it was great since I could floor it in OD without kicking the gear.. Didn't require any driveshaft or tunnel clearance mods but it did require lengthening the kickdown rod...

Hope this helps.

Chris

Thought I wrote back on this. If your keeping it stock or mild I'd go with the 500. Since the 500 is just a 904 you get that nice first gear compared to the 518, 727 based. I'm going to replace my 999 with a 500 soon. I'm definately going with the 500 because of the lock up and I'm using it everyday. I'm not pushing that much horsepower that light or heavy duty will matter, I'm building a supercharged 3.9 with hopefully about 250 to 300 horses. And as long as we're on the duribility subject. I have a friend with a very well worked 340 and the 500 is living behind it, he's had more problem with the converters than the trans. Either trans you go with I'd keep the original around so when you go to sell it they'll have the original parts to go with it for restoring.

I am going to stay with the 500. It is a 500 lockup and since it is a Shelby I don't want to modifiy it too much. I will probably use the MP 2300 stall lock up converter.
