I have a 2001 QC There is this weird sound
that happens when slowing down from
around 20 mph. It almost sounds like metal
rubbing. Keep in mind this is without pressing
the brakes and just coasting. It also happens
when I use the brakes. I had the rear drums
cleaned and adjusted but still have the
problem. Does anyone else have this ??

are you possitive it is from the rear? Is the sound kinda like a weird buzz - cause i got that noise but if its two metals rubbing i got no idea man, sorry.

If its the front its prolly the intermediate steering column shaft.

Its hard to explain how it sounds. Its like a
metal friction sound but not a screetch, Its like
a rubbing soud. It really sounds like its
coming from the rear. Sometime its more
noticble on turns. Keep in mind I hear it from
30 mph down.

Your trouble is most likely in the rear. I had the same problem, grinding noise while driving slowly and turning. What you need to do is simple. Change the diff fluid as follows: buy a hand suction pump, a tube of Tran-X additive, and 3 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. Pull the rubber plug on the diff, use the pump to suck out the old oil. Put in the additive followed by approx. 2.5 quarts of the gear oil (all the fluids can be squeezed from their containers directly into the diff). Keep filling until the oil begins to spill out the hole. Plug it back up. Take a deep breath and grab a beer. You're done. Problem solved. All for under $40. Hope this helps.

I will try the diff fluid first. If that dosent work I
will go from there. I didnt even think it could be
the diff. I changed the rear fluid about 15000
miles ago with Mobil 1 syn but didnt add the
friction additive. Maybe thats where I went
wrong. I will try and let you know thanks for the
advice

any chance the backing plate is rubbing on the drum.
by the way the friction additive believe it or not promotes slippage in the diffs clutch packs. if it didnt have some give to it it would wear out alot quicker. given that you do have noise in the diff it may be wise to take the cover of all together. just to check the debris on the magnet in the bottom and to do a visual on the ring and side gears.
