The gap gauge probably has some wires of varying thicknesses to measure the gap. Some gap gauges come with a gapping tool as well (don't know if yours has one). If yours doesn't have one, go down to your local auto shop and tell them you would like a gapping tool. It has little 'notches?' in it. You can grab the electode on the spark plug with one of these notches and bend it open further if you want to increase the gap, or bend it closed further if you want to make the gap smaller.

I use the concrete floor to push close and a broad tip screw driver to pry open. (but I'm a redneck)
be sure not to pry on the tip of the plug, be careful and go slow.

I like the guages that have a wedge going around the edge instead of the wire hoops. You just start at the narrowest setting and slide the plug up to your gap while wiggling it a little. There $.99 at Autozone. I also use the concrete floor to close the gap. Guess I'm half a redneck.

When I come home every day I see a horse in the yard, yet I'm suddenly feeling like I'm lacking in redneckness.

(I use a little tool w/ a notch for bending the tab)

I use the same one that timberwolf uses. Just stick it
in the opening on the top of the plug, and slide it
around to the gap mark (example .035) Either force it
open so that you can slide it that far, or tap it so it
pinches tight at that mark.
I don't know if autolite makes plugs or not. I have
JBAs, but I have also heard great things about MSD.
Be sure to get a new gasket with your new t-stat. And
- instead of undoing those horrible hose clamps, just
use a long socket to take off the two nuts on either
side of the t-stat housing.
No horse in my back yard, but there is a saddle and
several bridles in my house - and a 360 motor in the
mudroom off my kitchen. Guess ah'm a redneck too.
