Subject: what antifreeze???red in color
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2003 Ram 4.7L. I also have a Dakota, so don't get upset. As long as it's a Dodge, right. Anyway, I want to put a 180 stat in the Ram, but it has a red/ orange color antifreeze. Is this the same as GM Dex-Cool? On the Dex-Cool bottle it states it is for GM, Ford, and Dodge aluminum radiators. Will this work fine with mine? I don't think the normal green antifreeze would work well since it has the red in it from the factory. Thanks.

I just changed to a 180 T-stat and I used Zerex G-05. It says right on the lable for use in Chrysler vehicles 2001 and newer. Its yellow in color and is long life anti-freeze. I got it at Autozone.

thats right. The GM Dex Cool will work for aluminum radiators for Dodge. I would be extra careful and just buy the Dodge recommended coolant from the dealer, or better yet, let them change it so the mixture is correct. Chances are though that GM's version and Dodge's coolant are alike since their is only like three coolant producers in the world.
Whatever you use, just make sure its for aluminum radiators and you will be fine. You probably already know this, but make sure to mix with water and test the mixture with a coolant tester available at any Autozone, DAPs, etc.

tml..compare to the other antifreeze post I just recalled. The reason I brought this up is because a trusted mechanic I know said that GM had had problems with their long-life antifreeze breaking down. He even recommended that I return to an old annual flush and fill with the green type. It's no skin off his back if the owner of the shop makes another buck or two, he knows that I take care of my vehicles.

When I installed my 180 t-stat, I re-used the fluid, which contained the right mixture of antifreeze back to the system.

What did you do with yours?

I just let mine drain in a pan and will dispose of it. I thought about reusing it, but I didn't want to put that fluid back in that had run down the frame crossmembers, etc. and possibly (most likely) collected dirt. I would rather spend the extra $7 (1 gallon of antifreeze and 1 gallon of distilled water) and be sure the coolant I put back in was completely dirt-free. I don't want any problems later on, because I saved $7.

That's a good thought. Mine pretty much drained stright into the pan, and allowed me to leave the sediment, if any in the pan when returning it.

As far as which Anti freeze is better, I dunno.

The red is good for 5 years, the green 3 years, if you have red and add green you reduce the life to 3 years
