Maybe it's time to call-out the gas companies?

LEt's see, they raise the price of gas when the cost of oil goes up, for whatever reason. Mostly just saying that supply is getting more expensive, so they HAVE to increase to break even.
Then teh cost of oil drops, but the gas prices CONTINUE to rise, and they say "oh, it's not immediate, it takes time for the effects to be felt". What about when you raised the prices? That was pretty immediate after the cost of oil rose.

Then, once war finally breaks out, they'll raise them again claiming a shortage of oil, even though little of our oil comes from Iraq, and the Saudi's have already agreed to increase production to cover any losses when the Iraqi supply stops.
This smacks of rampant price gouging, and the current administration has no incentive to help reduce costs, or curtail gas manufacturer's blatant attempts to artificially inflate prices. In fact, they probably have a lot of incentive to continue letting these corporations rake in the profits.

At this point in world politics, a war with Iraq is a foregone conclusion. They could at least get it over with so these prices can get back down to a more normal level (they'll NEVER be back TO normal, because my idea of normal is $1.25 per gallon for 87 octane).

C'mon, gov't. Yuo've made all the bluster, got the troops ready, get your a$$e$ in there and get those oil fields before Saddam does something to prevent us from being able to use them.

Man... I haven't seen gas for 1.25 in a little more then two years, when I first bought the truck. That sure would be nice. Yeah, the whole war is a front. Everyone knows the world revolves around natural resources, and sadly to say oil is a scarce resource thus making it valuable.

There's just no way that distribution/delivery costs are an argument for these price differences. "What the market will bear" I guess...In Tn: 1.53Reg/1.63Mid/1.73Super.

There are a couple specific reasons why California has higher gas prices, all of them have to do with what voters in the state requested, or the people the voters elected. California doesn't have many refineries, they are just to "dirty" to be in their own backyard, so you have greater distribution cost. Californians also use more gas in their long commute lifestyle, this just exxagetates the distribution problem, it probably amounts to an extra 5% or 11 cents per gallon. Californians also tax their gas much higher then other places, about $.1/gallon more on average, but as much as 20 cents more. California also has stricter "reformulation" requirements that add another 5 cents to the cost, also the otside refineries don't gear up to make the "special" california gas as much as federal gas which leads to bigger swings in the supply, and thus the prices. Finally wages are higher in California, so there are less profits to be made after considering labor costs, from the guy driving the truck to the lady ringing up the sale, also the business probably figure they get sufficient share of the sales without trying to compete with lower prices. I bet it's not the easiest thing to get approval for a new gas station on some street corner in California to help competition. And on that note, the stations are required to have greather saftey and enviromental controls at the staions, from the tanks to the nozzles. They probably also have a bigger problem with theft and crime as well, here in Montana you can pump first and pay later, even McDonalds takes checks in our town. All and all that adds up to a good 1/2 dollar more per gallon I'd say.

I'm sure there are things that cost much less in California then other states, when we lived in Eureka, Ca for 3 years we built a nice redwood deck and the materials were less then pine costs in most states. Produce is also good, fresh, and cheep in California. Overall our energy bills were next to nothing In Eureka as well, and our house wasn't even insulated, the climate was pretty steady. Here in Montana the heating bills are big in the summer and this spring I'm breaking down and putting in AC for our 100 degree summers. This will make out modest 1400 sq ft house average about $120 month all year long for power and gas, in Eureka we were comfortable and yet only spent about $50/month for the same size house. Then again that was about 5 years ago now, and with what happened to energy prices in California our old house may be running $120 now too!

Here in Houston prices are run from $1.65 for 87 to $1.85 for 93.

However, as a consultant in the upstream side of the oil/gas business, my $.02 on the gas prices is that this is just basic economics. Of course, gasoline being an inelatic good leads to much longer price peaks, but generally companies will lower prices to market due to competition.

Yeah, I actually bought gas on base today and it wasn't as bad as my first post. It was actually one 2.08 and I was pretty happy, everywhere else its still 2.17 for the cheap stuff. I ended up paying a little under $39 to fill the tank, I even had a dollar left to buy a soda.

I hope the gas co.'s will start to compete and have a good ol fassion price war! Oh and to all who are in the military, thanks and good luck, god bless america! Im right beside you!
