Subject: Truck stalled smoke coming out of intake
IP: Logged

Message:
First about my truck it is a 99 R/T with 95,000
miles and it is all stock except for the MSD coil
and PCV valve I just put on this past weekend.
I had driven from work to Pep Boys yesterday
which is about a 30 minute drive and every
thing was fine but when I left Pep Boys I
stopped at a stop light and my truck missed
once. I looked at the gauges and everything
was fine and then it did it again but this time it
quit. I put it in park and restarted it, I left it in
park while I was waiting for the light to turn
green, when the light turned I put it in drive and
gave it some gas and it died again but this
time it would not restart. When I opened the
hood there was a small stream of smoke
coming out the opening of the air intake that
smelled like burning oil, I took the top of the air
box off and when I did a small cloud of smoke
came out and a small stream of smoke was
coming out of the air intake tube. The truck sat
for about 8 minutes and then I tride to restart it
at first it cranked over a few times like it wasnt
going to start but then it did. I put it in reverse
and backed up the parking lot to Pep Boys and
let it sit with the hood opened for about 25
minutes checked all the fluids and everything
was ok. I then started it up and went to go
home, at the same stop light when I stopped
this time my truck started smoking out the tail
pipe. The rest of the way home it drove fine
and the smoke cleared up and never came
back. I know my intake gasket has been blown
for awhile and I have an M1 to put on it this
weekend with new plugs, wires, dist. cap rotor
button and a K&N Fipk2 and I have already
changed my coil. Could this have been my
intake gasket getting even worse? What could
cause my truck to stall and smoke come out
the throttle body? The check engine light or no
other lights came on. Like I said everything is
stock even the plugs, the only thing I have
changed on my truck since I've had it is one
set of tires and just put on Power Slot rotors.
Sorry for such a long post I'm just a little
worried about my truck. The one good thing
that happened was an older lady driving a
Dakota sport stopped and let me use her
phone to call my wife. Just goes to show that
Dakota owners whatch out for each other.

Will it still crank? If not motor is smoked. If it still cranks you may have a broken timing chain.

Simpleman96 yes it still cranks, like I said I
ended up driving it home and it was fine after
the smoke stopped at the red light. Any other
thoughts?

That to.

Take your air hat off and look down into the manifold for oil. It will pool up taward the back.

it could have something to do with your emissions like an egr vaulve but i dont think it has one mabe a map sensor. my freind studying to be a mechanic said he was working on a car that from what he describe was doing the same thing and he was saying something about emissions. im not sure about it but it is a posiblity. i had a problem with a camro where the egr valve went bad and it keeped chocking the engine but i the intake never smoked. is there a service engine soon light on?

Thanks for the help guys. Simpleman96 the
belly pan gasket is blown and I have known
about that for about a month I just know got
everything I need to fix it. adam182003 what
you are talking about may have a little to do
with it also I know my cat. has fallen apart on
the inside and my O2 sensors are probably
getting bad if not already since they have
95,000 miles on them. I will be putting an M1
on it and giving it a tune up this weekend and I
will also be changing out the converter and
exhaust with O2 sensors withen the next
week. I hope this will take care of my problem.
I also have a compression checker just to set
my mind at ease. Thanks again

Adam182003 is a real genius, the 6 and 8 daks have NOT HAD AN EGR VALVE on them since the magnum engines came out. The current daks also DO NOT HAVE A SERVICE ENGINE SOON LITE either.the cat is on the exhaust end not the intake end so I fail to see how that could possibly be your problem either. I don't know what it is but I also know what it ain't.

Thanks for the help and the ideas. I put the M1
on this weekend and also plugs, plug wires,
dist. cap and button and 180 thermostat. I
have driven it about 70 miles and so far
everything has been fine. I think maybe the
belly pan gasket being blown it may have
sucked in enough oil to make my truck stall
and the smoke was from the oil in the hot
cylinder burning off. At least that is the best
thing I can come up with. Thanks again for the
help.
