My 2001 Quad Cab w/NV3500 and 54,000 miles had a transmission failure. It has always made a noise simular to driveline wrap-up (clunk during shifting) and a loud whining (which I thought was normal). I changed the lubricant at 30,000 miles with the "use only Mopar Part #". It started making a gravelly noise when in neutral and the clutch was engaged. Disengage the clutch and the noise stopped. This led me to believe the input shaft bearing was going bad. I also noticed there was a slight staion at the bottom of the bell housing (input bearing seal failure). Took it to Magnussen's Dodge in Auburn California. They stated 3rd and 5th gears were going bad. They replaced the transmission under the extended warranty I purchased with a factory rebuilt transmission. Parts took a while longer than the 5 days the extended warranty covered the rental car, but they are covering the additional expense. They said the replacement transmission has a 36,000 mile warranty on it. Hope this one lasts awhile longer.

A friend of mine bought a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 and it has a "noisey" transmission. Guess what kind of transmission it has? It has the New Venture NV3500 that our Dakotas have!

So.. For those GM lovers out there, keep in mind the base auto manufacturer usually gets the drive train components from a third party source, and often the base manufacturers use the same source and parts!

But Magnussen's has been very good to us. In my opnion they ARE a Five Star dealer.

I've been noticing some noises with mine, but I've been thinking that it was normal. I'll have to have my gearhead of a brother in law take a ride.
