I bought a 2003 dakota sxt reg cab about a month and a half ago and unfortunately I totalled it. I now am ready to purchase a new truck. I loved my dakota but I am now test driving a 2003 Ram 1500 sxt and was looking for opinions on which one to go with. Like I said I loved my dakota, but I also really enjoy the ram. thanks for your help

If you can afford the Ram and are comfortable with the size, go with the ram..Only reason i got the Dak over the Ram was that I really didnt need the size..The Dak was just right for me

For what it is worth, Consumer Reports rates the reliability, satisfaction, and depreciation for the Dakota as average, average, and average, respectively. It rates the Ram as poor, average, and NA, respectively.

I have to agree with BlueThunder, I wanted a quad cab and the ram would just be to big for me.
SXT is a v6, why not test drive a 4.7 and a Hemi.
might make up your mind for you. If you get a quad cab you have the option of the v6, 4.7 or 5.9.
2003 dak also come with disk brakes all around.
good time to buy a dak if so inclined.

Only thing I heard bad about the full size Ram from a friend that has one is he's NOT happy with the 4.7. He says it's underpowered for that size truck with 4x4. He wishes he would have bought a Ram with the 5.9 or even waited till the new Hemi was available.
I had a 2001 Ram. I put 1600 (yes 1600) miles on it and got rid of it. It was the 4x4 with 5.9. You could NOT pass a gas station with it plus every time I wanted to pull it into the garage, I had to pull both mirors in to clear the door opening. Love my 2002 Dakota 4x4 with 4.7. This will make it my third one. :)

i had a ram as a rental while my truck was in the shop for 3 weeks, The mileage was horrendous (4x4, 5.9, quadcab, 1500), 12 MPG average. and I did not find it to be comfortable to sit in after about an hour. This is why I went with another dakota.

Yeah if you go with a ram you've got to go diesel. Gas engines in those big trucks are ridiculous on fuel.

between all the guys here at work we have a pretty diverse group of dodges, i have a quadcab dak and love it, another guy just bought a new ram with the high output cummins and loves it, another guy has a new ram with the 4.7 and is looking to get rid of it because it is underpowered and another guy just got rid of his f150 and bought a new 1500 ram with the hemi and cant stop talking about it, the one with the 4.7 ram is already dealing to trade for one with a hemi and he hasnt even had that truck for a year. hope this helps you.

I think the point is to make sure you are 100% happy with whatever you decide so that are truly happy with yuor new truck. Never try to learn to like something about a vehicle...

Lessons I've learned:
1) always get the biggest engine
2) do not settle for a color
3) always get all the factory options you want when you get it
4) make sure you can afford it before you buy it, including gas and insurance. Do not strap yourself financhally for a car / truck.

The exception:

Getting the 4.7 over the 5.9 as the 5-speed is where it is at for me.

Chris
