i'm needing pads for my truck bad, i also think that i need rotors due to the crazy shuddering when i stop, anyway, where is the best place to get pads and rotors that are going to last, would like low dust and LONG life, i've got 18,500 on my truck now only had it since june, original owner, and its already needing brakes, its probably due to my driving style but i have slowed down/driven more responsibly here recently anyway, what would you guys recommend? i've looked into raybestos but cant find any place to buy them, also i wont buy the advance auto brakes because they dont offer a true lifetime guarentee

My 01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, heavy with the SLT, Trailer towing, leer cab high shell, etc. etc., now has about 33K miles on it.

Funny, but the brakes, stop very well, don't pulsate like a warped rotor, etc. I tow my boat, etc.

A few times before, they felt a little funny, like a warped rotor, but lazy ol me, did nothing.

But most all the time, they stop great, don't squeel, grind, or pulsate. I read the article I used to give the link to:
http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm

Interesting article, do I think everyone has the myth discussed here?-NO, but many do and if they'd wait a little while, there brakes would again be smooth as mine are, without doing anything!

YOu, however, if you drive and brake hard all the time, with an auto matic tranny, probably DO have bad rotors!

and lacent,

one more thing,

NO, I don't think you should be having brake problems anyway. That sucks!

Didn't want it to look like I'm trying to say it was your fault. With low mileage, YOu should not be having this problem!

This seems like a good place to spread what little wisdom I have regarding these brakes. If you have rear drums, MANUALLY ADJUST THEM!!! I have had my '02 QC since last May, and the only thing I was disappointed with was the braking performance. I had to change the brake shoes on my Durango, and afterwards thought "What the heck. I'll check the adjustment on the Dakota." Yep, they needed it, even though I always back up and stop to activate the auto-adjusters. It brakes like a totally different truck now, and I'm not exaggerating. The fronts were doing all the work, which would have soon worn them out and overheated the rotors enough to warp them. You might want to check yours when you replace your front hardware.

Good luck.

ok sounds like a plan to me, any specific tricks? or tips? even more so than that do i have to pull the cover and risk getting hit by that spring or is there an adjustment on the backside or what? never really messed with drums.

It would be nice if someone would answer his ?... I got my rotors from Stainless Steel Brake Co. They are a little expensive but worth the $$$... I also got the rear disc conversion kit.

RotoTech slotted and cross drilled rotors for $75 each and a good set of semi-metallic pads will set you right up. The whole set for the front rotors and pads can be bought for just over $200. Email me for specifics. If you want low dust, supposedly the ceramic pads are good for that, but I cracked two sets of rotors using ceramic pads on my truck and will not use them again. Brake dust is somethig your going to have to deal with on disc brakes. Proper break in of the pads and rotors is key to long life. And I also agree on the rear drum adjustment. It NEEDS to be done manually probably at every oil change to verify they are working good.

I have never adjusted drum brakes.
Is it simple enough for one of you to give me a quick lesson in this forum or should I get a book.

Usually I just start wrenching on stuff and figure it out, but if your willing give a game plan, I'm all for that.

Also HSKR I have read your posts in the GB for powerslots. You have sold me. I have not been able to find a good retailer online for the Roto Tech brakes.
I saw the links you posted but I can not call while I am prentending to work. I have to use the SBD web purchase approch.
thanks in advance.

ok, thats not really that bad, i can afford 200 to completely redo the front, and i can do brakes myself so labor isnt an issue, but does anyone know anything on drums? all i know is that there is a spring inside that likes to hit ya when you pop off the cover, also, how much did your conversion kit cost?

Adjusting the rear brakes is pretty simple . There are tools you will nedd but the tools are inexpencive. You will need what is called a brake spoon they cost around 6 dollars for a cheapy that will work fine. On the dakota durango rear brake system look behind the brake drum on the backing plate. there is a little rubber plug abought 1 inch long by 1/2 inch wide pull it out . The adjust ing wheel is just behind the plug in the slot slightly rear form the center of the slot. Whith the wheel lifted from the ground put the brake spoon in the slot at an upward angle and lift up with the end of the brake spoon in your hand. This will cause the end that is in the drum to pivot down . as long as your on the adjusting the wheel you will hear a clicking sound. This is the wheel pasing the self adjusting arm in the drum. Adjust the brake tension untill the whell spins 2 revolutions and stops. Be carefull not to over tighten. If you cant turn the wheel by hand then back the adjustment off until you can. When finished be sure to replace the rubber plug to keep road dirt and grime out or you will casue early wear of the shoes and drums. ASE Tech...
