Subject: So how's this 4X4 stuff work anyway?

I know a little about diffs... viscious, gear, clutch... let me back up. Two weeks ago I traded my VR4 "all wheel drive" for a 350Z with LSD, TCS, & VCD. Yesterday I traded my Dodge Stealth, open diff, 4 seater, for a new 4 seater... '98 dak sport, 3.9, 5 speed MT, 4X4. I could never justify a truck before.. had to have a sports car and the obligatory family car. Finally got my pickup. So far I love it but haven't been able to find out much about what makes it tic, especially the trans and rear/front end. I tried searching this site (and will continue) and looking for old reviews in C & D, Motor Trend.. even Road & Track. But all I've learned so far is: It sounds like you can go to 4 HI on the fly but don't go too fast 50-55(?). It didn't have an owners manual or I might be able to fugure out what this thing's made of. Does anyone have link or old post that explains the diff & trans or an old post or just a short reply. Love my new truck, just need some info!!

The following links have good info on how some of the stuff in the truck works. And yes, keep searching this site. Lots of good info on it.
As for using 4x4, don't use 4x4 on dry pavement. You'll bind up the driveline cause the wheels will be trying to go different speeds when you turn, but are locked together and are forced to turn the same speed. Best to not fly around in 4x4 either.

Okay thanks, You guys have helped a lot. Sounds like they really lock. The "Part Time 4-Wheel" light on the dash had me confused, made it sound like it was locked only some of the time, Guess it's more a reminder to use them part time. I'll keep reading but you've given me enuf so I don't trash this thing in the 1st week... 4 wheelin around the beltway :)
