OK, I was installing a cold air intake on my truck last weekend and I noticed this. If you look close, there seems to be some burn marks around the insided of the opening at the bottom. Is this normal? Does the TB need periodic cleaning? The trucks only got 15K miles on it. If it helps it's an '02 4.7L. Thanks.

From what I understand yes it is normal and yes you should take it of and clean it every once in a while. I'm actually about to do that in the next week or so.

Go to the dealership and get some Mopar Combustion Cleaner. It helps clean the combustion chamber, intake and exhaust manifolds. It is completely safe, works pretty well too. Just follow the instructions and you will see results.

Hope this helps
Dan

Clean the IAC sensor's plunger while you're at it. If you have a Dremel handy, port the 68MM, to a "true" 68MM while you have the TB off. Not a hard job, and you will notice smoother acceleration, and possibly a few more horses.

Here's some pics of the before and after on my 65MM TB...

The first pic was after cleaning the TB with a little mineral spirits and a terry cloth towel.

The second pic was taken after good cleaning and porting.

I would recommend cleaning fairly often. Mine had 20,000 miles when I cleaned it thoroughly for the first time, and was pretty gunked up.
