Subject: Power Inverter blows power outlet fuse

This may be a dumb question but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a 750 watt power inverter with a peak of 1500 watts and am trying to run a 720 watt vacuum (handheld) I have the inverter connected to my power outlet (12V 20A) and the fuse (on the power outlet) blows every time I try to use the vacuum. I am guessing the problem is *not* the initial current draw because of the 1500 watt peak.

Your power invertor should have also come with clips to connect it straight to the battery. You can't run high-wattage items from the power outlet. They should be run from the battery.

Yeah, I don't want to connect it directly to the battery. Does anyone know of a way to wire / rewire a higher capacity connection?

20A of availble capacity at 12 Volts is only 240 Watt capicity. It is not worth the added hassel to wire the power outlet directly to your battery for a vaccum. You might try a vacum designed to be pluged into an automotive cigarette lighter power reseptacle or a cordless dust buster. If you must use an inveter hard wire it with a high quality switch or breaker directly to your batter with 1 guage coper wire and be done with it!

HAHAHAHA... i got respect for ya man. You must want that vacuum to get any little crumb or whatever as soon as it hit the floor. Keep em clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW... i got one of those Sharks. Works great for the truck... gits into everywhere. I just plug it into an extension cord though.

only sandman got the reason it blows fuses right.

Thanks for all your comments. I had a feeling that what sandman said would be the answer. Having the charcoal interior is a pain because it shows EVERY little crumb. I guess I don't need a vacuum that lifts a 235lb refrigrator (sp?) I do want to be able to hook up a laptop, and video camera though but I don't think that will blow any fuses.

I've got a 350w invertor and have connected a 5" color TV, VCR, and XBox at the same time with no problems.

Got to keep those kids occupied. (no, we're NOT almost there!)

I mounted my inverter on the bottom of inside the center console (I leave the lid open when I'm using it for air flow). Its a Vector 400W / 750W Peak inverter. It has a 30A fuse in the DC line. I ran #10 wire straight to the battery with a 30A fuse in line. For yours you might think about running probably #8 straight to the battery. Check the current rating on your inverter. #8 wire should be plenty large enough for that kind of power.

I own a 700 watt power inverter with 1200 peak. It actually draws about 90 amps when it's working at maximum capacity. I just got finished hard wiring it into my 97 Dakota. I have the extended cab and ran the wire under the driver side rocker pannel and terminated the connections underneath the back seat. Wal-Mart has a 4awg amplifier wiring kit with fuses and everything for $25! This is a great deal. The 4awg wire is matched just right for the 700 watt inverter and it includes EVERYTHING you need to do a professional wiring job. Nice kit!!!

start out by reading up on the equipment your using find out how much amprage it will draw at max and what the constant will be also find out the watts which u said. then go to radioshack or some where and pick up the wiring you will need plus make sure u get the connectors too so u have good connections. then make a diagram how u want to run the wiring and then run it just make sure u make sure to go back and check it all again.

My power plug only works when the truck is running. I don't have a cigarette lighter so this is the only power source I have. The dealer says it isn't supposed to work unless the truck is running but I've never heard of this. Why burn "expensive" gas because you want to blow up an air mattress?
