I have to tow my car from Portland Or. to Dallas Tx. Its a 1970 Bmw 2002 its about 2000lbs and the tow dollie is about 500lbs. will have about 500 more pounds in the bed. I have a 2000 with 3.9 4x4 all stock with a classs 3 hitch, I have never used it to tow anything and I am a bit worried about the Rockies, pulling up all those hills. I could go south down I-5 then over on I-40 but its a lot longer! How will the 3.9 do towing? will it still do freeway speeds and how much will the MPG suffer get about 16 normal.
Thanks,
Jim

According to the Dodge website you can tow either 3600 lbs or 4400 lbs depending on if you have the 3.55 or 3.92 rear end.

Your truck will do fine, but will not win any drag races. Your gas mileage will be lousy. I used to have a 2WD 3.9 5 speed and once towed a 68 Camaro from central CA to Texas with no problems, and I averaged about 12 mpg (19-20 hwy was normal for me with that truck).

You should have no problems if the motor/tranny can handle it. I have a 98 4x4 5.2 and hauled a 78 Silver Ann. Vette through the Rockies in CO @ christmas. I also towed the car in an enclosed car trailer. 5 MPG hell yeah. Oh yeah I also have airbags.
