Subject: 360airintakez and my 4.7L Questions
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been debating getting one of those fancy-shmancy air intake kits. The 360airintakez looks like the way I'm going to go. But I have a few questions/concernse. I have a '02 4.7L. I've done some research and I've read that that model will need to relocate the IAT sensor into the tubing (http://www.360airintakez.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?&pg=iat). Drilling a hole in the tube and inserting the sensor is no big deal, but they mention that the wiring harness MAY need to be modified to reach. I guess my question is - has anyone with an 02 4.7 installed this intake? If so, did you have to do any modifications? Other than tapping that hole for the sensor? Thanks. Oh, and was there any other major/minor issues with the install? Thanks

Steve

I have a 02 4.7 and my sensor is located in/prior to the TB. If yours is the same, then you don't have to do any mods. The only tricky part I encountered was tube placement. It's a little tricky working the two tubes until you get it right. I suggest attaching the filter to the long tube and then manually fit the components until they fit. The filter does rub against the horn and a grounding cable, but im very pleased with the product.

Yeah, I popped the hood when I got home from work. That pic on their web page kinda confused me because they said the pic was for an '02 4.7L. But when I looked at my engine, the sensor was in the TB. So it sounds like I have the same setup as you. I feel much better now. Thanks for the 411.

the Iat moving forward makes it sense a lower intake air temp, and increases timing slightly and increase injector outpur slightly. You can read about on SpeedTweaks tip and tricks on their website.

I'm guessing that the earlier '02 models had the IAT in the manifold. The stock manifold that was in my truck and the HO Jeep manifold that's in there now both have a place for the IAT in the manifold itself. Of course, that's not where I put mine. I relocated mine to the CAI tube, and I might put it in the right fenderwell with a custom made protective "helmet", so to speak.

I'm a little confused, basically there are 2 different setups, (1) where the IAT is in the manifold, or (2) where the IAT is just before/in the tb. I thought if it was in the manifold your fine, just order a CAI and bolt it on and your good to go. I thought it was the second setup that needed modification, but according to Uncle Sam and Steevoreeno, the second setup needs no modification either, so what is the website talking about the need for modifying the IAT? Can anyone clear this up?

OK, I admit that I know very little about enginges. But I'm working on it. So bear with me. So I'm not trying to prove anything wrong or throw mud in anyone's face. But according to the 360 website there are two different setups. One setup has the IAT sensor in the Throttle Body and the other setup has the IAT sensor in the square air box coming off the Throttle Body. Now I know that I'm showing my ignorance here, but I've never heard mention of a manifold. I don't know if a manifold is another name for the Throttle Body or the Air Box. But according to everything I've read on here, there are just those two setups in question. Hope this clears up some stuff instead of adding to the confusion.

ON my 01, the IAT sensor, is located IN THE MANIFOLD-the intake, which is between the TB and the cylinder heads! It's a 4.7, I thought that was what we were talking about-the 4.7's, and yes, they did change the location of them, I think in 02-not sure on which year.

The system goes: ambient air(outside air), air filter, air intake, to the air hat(if you still have the square box on top of the engine), to the TB-throttle body, to the intake manifold, cylinder heads, cylinder, exhaust header, etc.

Woah, there Todd. I don't know if you were belittling me with that nice little explanation of the air flow in an internal combustion engine or not, but I get the overall general picture of how it works. And yes, we were talking about the '02 4.7L. And in the '02 4.7L the only two locations for the IAT sensor is either in the throttle body or the air box. Not the manifold. I know what the mainfold does and where it is located. I just didn't know if someone was mixing up their names because nowhere have I heard mention of the IAT sensor being in the manifold on the '02 4.7L. Just the air box and the TB.

Now if I totally misread your post and took it the wrong way, let me be the first to apologize. I know that the best intended posts can be read the wrong way. If so, I'm sorry.

Steevie,

NO, I was not trying to belittle you, sorry if it seemed that way.

I do know they changed the location of that sensor, and that mines' in the manifold, driver side, behind where TB bolts to it, kinda going vertically. (01 model)

Again, have a good day, I wasn't trying to offend you/anyone.

I was confused with the exact same issue Steve. My understanding is that the new new (yes that is two new's) 4.7L have the IAT in the air hat. Every post I've read have the sensor in the tb or manifold. Either one is "supposedly" relocatable, however if your sensor is in the air hat, you must relocate due to the removal of the air hat. In our situation, there is no mod needed unless you want to. The intake mod is worthwhile especially if you want a better sound while passing losers going 55 in the fast lane.

It's all good Todd. Like I said, I didn't know exactly how to read what you wrote. That's why I apologized before I posted. Besides, if we get mad at fellow Dak drivers, who will we have left? I'm sure as heck not gonna associate myself with a Ford driver. :D
