Subject: New Ball Joints Question

Message:
I installed the new ball joints on my 2k Dak 4x2 after 40,000 miles, also installed new Rancho RS 5000 shocks in front also. man how good it feels, nice and tight. Now I need the new alignment, But one thing here, the upper ball joints when removed leave a 3/8" holes in the upper control arm, but the new upper ball joints came with 5/16" bolts, I said WTF so I went to the hardware store purchased grade 8 bolts, nuts, etc.. for 5.00 and then drilled the holes in upper ball joints to 3/8" diameter.Installed the uppers and it works great. I cant believe the engineering on some stuff. I hope some people don't install them with the holes being bigger than the bolts? if so the uppers could eventually shift around and throw the alignment way off, not to mention the strength factor would be weaker. I feel i did it the correct way. I know so.

sure it wasnt the wrong joint?

that is odd. but when determining strenghts of materials,a rule of thumb when making holes is to make sure you have atleast the diameter of the hole in material around the circumfence of the hole.

I have a new set of Moog uppers for my 99 dakota sitting on my desk waiting to go in this weekend. I'll let you all know how it went along with the fit of the bolts. With the new joints in I'll be crankin the torsion bars. Does any one know how much you can go and still get a good alingnment done?

I put the moog upper ball joints in my 4x4 and the 4wd place was able to get another inch out of the torsion bars with a good alignment. It just depends on how much they were already cranked to begin with.

Hows does the ride compare with the extra inch of crankin, also have you changed out the shocks, and whats the milage on your truck. If she's to stiff then I might not crank it up. I just want the hollow sound to go away. I hope that the upper joints is the only cause of the hollow joint sound.
