Subject: Black soot in TB?

Message:
There is black carbon/charcoal looking powder lining the barrels of my TB. Could this be from the AIT mod I did and it running so rich? How should I clean it, do you think carb cleaner and washing it down the intake will hurt? Thanks

That is normal for the bores to get carbon inside them. Use any good carb cleaner to clean them. Clean the bores, throttle plates and shaft. I had a Dodge Caravan that seemed to loose power onetime. I called the dealer to make a appointment to check it out. HE told me before I brought it in, clean the TB and it sloved the problem. I clean mine at least once a year, but check it when I change the oil and clean the air filter, etc.

If it's really dirty, take it off and clean it. If you can't take it off start the engine running and spray cleaner in there so that it almost dies, but keeps running. Manipulate the throttle with your hand to rev it a little so it doesn't die. Give a squirt every 10k miles or so after to keep it clean.

How to clean your Throttle Body:

Most people think that cleaning the throttle body requires a can of Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner and a quick "wash" of the bores. This may work, but only washes the dirt and cleaner down into your intake manifold where it can puddle up and break down the belly-pan gasket. Then, it also is pulled into the combustion chamber where is can foul up the spark plugs.

The proper way to clean your throttle body is to remove it from the engine (you'll need a small pan, some compressed air, and a new throttle body gasket for this procedure):

1. Remove your air hat from the throttle body
2. Disconnect the sensor connectors (TPS, MAP, and IAC)
3. Remove the four throttle body bolts
4. Lift the throttle body up and away from the intake manifold (place a rag over the manifold opening to prevent anything from falling inside)
5. Remove the three sensors (Do not drop them)
6. Remove the three screws for the throttle linkage (Not required...can be done with linkage attached)
7. Place the throttle body in a small pan and spray Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner in the bores, underside passages, and ports. Let soak for about a minute.
8. Clean the IAC Solenoid - Refer to "How to clean the IAC Solenoid"
9. Spray some more Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner in the bores and ports of the throttle body
10. Wipe clean with a lint free rag (baby diaper works well) and blow out all the ports with some compressed air (a small can from a electronics store works just fine).
11. Reinstall all sensors, then reinstall on your vehicle with a new Throttle Body gasket (don't forget to remove the rag)

What is the torque spec. for the bolts that hold the TB to the manifold? I'm cleaning my TB this week, and I'd like to know how much to torque them down to. Thanks.

if the throttle body is full of soot wouldnt the manifold be full of it too. would it be a good idea to clean that too?

Does it take a lot of carb cleaner to mess up belly pan and motor? I have only sprayed it twice with carb cleaner. Do you think I have done any major damage?

Another problem to worry about...
Your pistons will naturally build up carbon above the top rings, in the gaps, and on the outer edges. While too much carbon is an indication of running rich and can be a bad thing, using carb-cleaner will disolve "holes" in the buildup, and impact combustion. You can have uneven combustion and even lose compression depending what you had to start with and how much cleaner you used.

Definately take parts off of an engine when cleaning them.
