I have a 1994 Dakota 4x4 3.9L auto extended cab?I want to install a c/d player as the factory stereo only has a casset deck. This am/fm radio has great sound and lots of power. My question is will a new alpine or pioner c/d unit rated at 45 or 50 watts x4 have the same amount of power as the factory stereo that is in this truck.I dont want to add a bunch of amplifiers and other stuff to get the same power output as the factory stereo thats in there now? Thanks to anyone that can offer some advise, ours truely shrewster.

I have a very similar truck to yours. A few years back I switched to an alpine head unit with 40 watts per channel. I was completely happy with it. If I remember right it would make the speakers peak before it ran out of power. Just remember, stereo equipment is an addiction. I now have exactly what you said you don't want it to end up being.

I don't think the factory stereo has quite the power that the aftermarket CD has. Most factory stereo's only push around 12 watts per channel but they usually match the speakers as far as wattage goes to get a good sound from a low wattage system. The aftermarket system will probably sound 100% better with the same speakers. You need to check the RMS rating on the new unit, even though it puts out 40 watts per channel that is max so the RMS will be the determining factor. 20 watts RMS - 23 watts RMS is good. 17 and less is a noticable difference. My Kenwood is 23 watts RMS per channel with a peak of 45 watts per channel.

shrewster56,
I just installed a Clarion DB325 cd player in my '96. It kicks the cr@p out of my factory speakers. It is 50w x 4, and has 18w RMS x 4. Like DT said, RMS is what to look for.
Now I need to find some speakers that give me a little bit more on the high end, other than that it's sounding good (for stock speakers)!
Good luck,
daveo.
