Subject: Transmission Noise??

I own an 02 clubcab sport 4.7 5speed trans. The weather has been real cold here the last couple of weeks (0-15 degrees cold). In the morning when I start the truck for the first time if I don't let it warm up for more than 5 minutes, it makes a kinda rubbing sound (tough to describe) coming from the trans through all the gears that goes away when I put it in neutral or come to a stop. It has only happened twice to me so far and goes away after the first mile or two. Does anyone else experience this? This is my first manual trans so I might be over reacting. I know sometimes they can be a bit noisy til they warm up and the fluid thins out but I am just curious to hear if anyone else has trhis problem.
Thanks Mike.

By the way. Sorry for the long post.

Mike,

Mine makes some wierd noises when cold as
well. The service manager at my dodge
dealer went for a ride with me and said he
could only hear normal gear mesh noise.

He said as long as it's quiet when warmed up,
all the bearings, etc. were OK. A bad bearing
would be louder when warm. Check out my
post:

I'm actually starting to think my noise is
coming from the rear end or Carrier Bearing. I
didn't think I could hear the noise when
coasting in neutral, but I can, it's still there,
just not as loud. I can hear the noise the best
if I put my ear close to the shift knob.

Does your truck have the Limited Slip
Differential?

Mine does, and I'm going to dump the rear
end gear oil this weekend and replace it with
some Mobil 1 synthetic and some new friction
modifer. I'm thinking it could be the trac-loc
making a bit of noise, we'll see.

Lemmers yeah I do have a limited slip in the truck, but the noise goes away before I can get a good listen. I am pretty sure its trans related though. The next time I hear it I'll try the ear by the shifter thing. As for dumping the gear oil, I have only 4k on the truck, so I aint gonna f%ck with it. If something happens thats what the 7yr 100K warranty is for. Just kidding. thanks for the info, much appreciated.
Mike
