I ran across an article about the 04 durango on the net and it mentioned that the next dakota is going to be downsizing. Anybody heard anything about this or is this just BS because i can't believe it.

Here's the address,

It's not going to be down sized. It's still based on the Durange platform. They might reduce the body panel/interior size so as not to directly compete with the full size Ram, but that's it.

From what I've heard and read on Car-Truck rumors website, the next Dakota is still up in the air. The Durango will be bigger thus if they use the same platform the Dakota will be almost the same size as the full size Ram. And since the prices are almost the same now, my sources tell me it might get scrapped. And Dodge is looking at getting into another smaller truck, like they did with the D50's made by Mishibiti(Spelling) a couple of years ago. Of course if this happens I'll be jumping on another Dakota at the end of this model run.

With Chevy and Ford both getting the S10 & old Ranger style pickups bigger, hope Dodge doesn't shoot themself in the toe by changing the Dakotas!

Maybe you should actually try reading the info on the website. Here, it sounds like this:

Dodge recently previewed the 2004 Dodge Durango, when they showed us their 2003 Durango R/T concept earlier this month. Many readers have written in wondering about the status of the next generation Dakota since both vehicles share the same platform.

Despite the fact that the current Durango was introduced after the Dakota, the next generation Durango will be the first to be launched. It will begin production in September and should be in showrooms by late October or early November. The Dakota on the other hand will continue through the 2004 model year and launch in the fall of 2004 as a 2005 model.

Why the delay? Regular readers will recall that the original Dakota program (codenamed NB) ran into trouble in late 2001. The problem came from the fact that market research had shown that consumers wanted the Durango to be larger. Armed with that information, Dodge engineers designed the new HB/NB platform with a ten-inch longer wheelbase.

While the change allowed the next Durango (HB) to have 24 percent more interior space than the current model. It made the Dakota just slightly smaller then the Ram. This through a wrench in the works since it didn't make much sense to build another slightly smaller Ram. In March of 2002 the program was halted for reevaluation.

And here's the kicker

"After much review Dodge reinstated the program and re-christened the Dakota "ND." It was decided that due to the huge amount of R/D dollars invested the ND would be based on the same platform, but that the body will be redesigned to take it back to mid-size truck scale."

What part of "same platform" don't you understand? They are just going to reduce the overall body size to keep it at a midsize instead of 3%-5% smaller than the Ram. Same platform as the new Durango, just "slightly" smaller body, which means it will be at least as big as the current generation, and most likely slightly larger.

Well thats just retarted!! Look like to me it would be the same size body that the next Durango has got. Also Why blote up the Durango anyway? I think the next Durango should be about the same size just longer. ex: Durango EXT.
