Subject: Limited Slip Broken?
IP: Logged

Message:
During a recent snow storm I had one wheel on ice and the other on dry pavement and the wheel on ice would spin. I thought with LSD the wheel on the dry payment was suppose to turn when the other wheel is not getting traction.

'limited slip' means limited slip. Not 'no
slip'.

With a normal open axle, both tires get
initially the same amount of torque. But because
one is on ice, you can only get the same low
amount of torque applied to the wheel on dry
ground as to the wheel on ice when it starts to
spin on ice. Which is not very much, and not
enough to move the truck.

With LSD, you don't get a 50/50 split anymore.
The LSD shunts a bit higher percentage of the
initial torque over to the wheel that's on dry
pavement than to the wheel on ice. But, even
though a little extra percentage is sent to dry,
it's still not enough to get the truck moving,
before the wheel starts to spin on the ice.

If the wheel that was spinning on ice was on
something a little less slippery, like mud, more
torque could be developed over the dry wheel.
So, even if the LSD percentage was the same as
on ice, there might then be just enough torque
sent to the dry side to get the vehicle moving.

Or, could also mean that the LSD cones are worn
out after a few years of use, like brake shoes
would be. In which case you'd end up with a
normal open diff.

Get a Powertrax and don't worry about it again. LSD isn't designed to give equal power to each wheel under situations of extreme traction differences. All the LSD is is a clutch pack, so you were more or less "slipping the clutch" and not going no where.

Powertrax no-slips are nice, in a lot of ways.

But, you should know what you're getting into.

When the powertrax senses that you're turning a corner, it unlocks itself, and all power is given to the inside wheel. The outside wheel just coasts around the corner.

So, if you're somewhere where you have to turn a lot of slick inside turns (any city where there's a lot of snow packed and polished to ice on the inside of the turn) it's going to be a lot worse that LSD or even an open differential. The only way around this, IMHO, is if you're running 4-wheel-drive high (or low) at the same time, so the front wheels can help pull you through that one slick inside 'dead' slippery spot.
