Subject: NV-3500 Noises when Cold
IP: Logged

Message:
How noisy is everyone’s NV-3500 5-speed
transmission when the temperature is below
freezing? My ‘02 Quad makes a
humming/groaning noise in second and third
gear when it’s really cold. It almost sounds
like a bad wheel bearing or wind noise, but I
know it’s the trans. ‘cause the noise goes
away if I put it in neutral and coast.

It also makes a rattling noise in third when it’s
really cold. It sounds like steel shot rolling
around in the bottom of an empty coffee can.

All of the noises go away after 10 or 15
minutes of driving so I’m not too worried, just
curious.

FWIW I tried running Red Line MTL this fall
and actually first noticed the groaning noise
when the temp. dropped down into the 40’s. I
switched back to the Mopar recommended
fluid and the sounds went away until it got
really cold around here in Wisconsin (negative
and positive single digit temps). I also think it
shifts better with the mopar fluid.

Thoughts?

I've noticed that rattling in 3rd and 4th, usually when it's fairly warm. I was guessing that it was the stick rattling since there's no forces pulling it sideways like in the other gears.

The NV-3500 seems to just be a really noisy transmission. It's the noisiest tranny i've ever used. I wish I ther was an easy replacement for it without having to mess with driveshafts other things.

I've run the Red Line MTL since new, got 13,600 on it now. We've had temps as low as -15' with the wind chill lately. I'm not getting any noise from my tranny.

Three things usualy cause a moan in a modern manual trans. 1) Bearing failure. 2) Lubricant failure! 3)Oil Pump Failure. If you are not useing a synthetic oil like Amsoil 5W30HD you need too. If you've got a moan with Redline in it you have a bearing issue!!! Redline makes the best manual trans fluids on the planet! No one makes one better!!! I use their product to mimic the shift feel and performance of Whale ester based fluids used in early Corvettes!!! I also use it in a C5 Corvette that races year round! You need to drop your truck off at the dealer after hours so it sets over night. Then have them test drive in the morning first thing so they can hear it! They need to check bearing clearance and shims before you get abnormal gear wear or shaft loading!! P.S. A transmission or T/Case should only be slightly lounder in the cold and it should quite down to normal rather quickly. It should never MOAN!!! You should only hear the gear makeing contact until the fluid coat them. Remeber that modern NV transmissions use an oil pump that actuly pumps the oil to the parts just like an engine oil pump. It is not like the old days when you had to relie on oil splash and the gears running through the fluid to take it to the top.

Sandman,

My truck only has 7,500 miles on it. I dumped the factory trans fluid and refilled with RedLine MTL at about 6,000 miles. I didn't notice any difference except more gear noise with the MTL and the fact that it wouldn't downshift into 2nd and 1st gear as easily as it did before the switch. I noticed the odd noise when cold about 500 miles later.

I dumped the MTL and replaced it with the recommended Mopar trans fluid for the NV-3500. I immediately found the trans to be quieter and better shifting.

Anyway, if there was a bad bearing, wouldn't the noise be worse when the transmission warmed up? After about ten minutes of driving the transmission is dead quiet.

The thing that gets me is it only does it when it's really cold, about 20 degrees or less. If I heat up my garage over night and drive it the next morning, no noise.

Finally the noise is really hard to describe, it's not really loud, the first time I heard it I thought I had one of the back windows down a tiny bit and was hearing some wind noise.

I guess I'll swing by the dealer this week and see what they think.

Sandman,

Your mention of Whale Ester Based Fluids reminded me of some of my clients that have used a product called Lubegard. *** I am not endorsing Lubegard, nor have I ever used it, nor do I promote it or sell it. *** This is just offered as an addition to Sandman's statements.

As stated, some of my clients have tried Lubeguard. I was told that it has the same consistency as ATF and looks like ATF (they make a gear oil additive as well). It was originally suppposed to replace Sperm Whale Oil which they claim was in transmission fluid in the early days prior to the crackdown on whaling activities. I heard that Sperm Whale Oil was a rancid smell by the way.

Which leads me to another story. Now I don't know if this is true, but someone from a refinery once told me they put perfume in their oils to attract female cumstomers.

Now just think about this for a minute. A beautiful woman with sweet smelling motor oil as her "perfume". Could a guy really ask for anything more???

I think it is just a matter of science. Since I have a late model NV 3500, mine doesn't have an oil pump like the newer ones. The extreme cold temps contract metal and thicken oils, your pumps are probably making the noise until the temperature warms up. The metal expands, the oil thins a little more the pump gears aren't so tight and the noise goes away after a few minutes or so. Possible??? The aluminum housings make these babies noisy also.

My 98 Dakota NV 5 speed hasn't made a single sound. I have towed my boat and 5000+ lb travel trailor from PA to SC and back a few times. With 72,000 miles on it and never touching the trans fluid, I am more than happy with this 5 speed. This winter... coldest on record in the Northeast and still quiet. My 2003 Ram has the same trans and so far, it is the quietest thing around. Sometimes we get lemons.... I'd get it checked out. Noise (the way you guys describe it) is not good.
