Message:
That's what I said... She rolled over her Durango and slammed into a tree....and on that note does anyone know if there were ever any recalls on the airbags or is ther a website I can go to to find out.. and if anyone has any info about when the airbags should deploy on these damn things. Cause she hit the front end dead on right in the middle and it didn't go off, and her seatbelt came undone. shes ok but if there was nothing wrong with the air bags they should have gone off. PLEASE POST if you know anything about this. Thanks a bunch in advance guys your help is appreciated.

did she hit anything with the front end? i'm a firefighter and have been for 7 years, we do vehical extrications so i've taken several class's about air bags and other safety devices and an air bag will only deploy if you hit something head on, they don't always deploy though, which is very dangerous for us firefighters cause they can go off at any time!!! but anyways if she did'nt hit with the front end then nothing was wrong, and if she did and they did'nt go off it does'nt always mean that it's a design flaw, they just don't deploy sometimes :(

But isint the point of an air bag to go off on any kind of front end or back end collision.. i mean they are there to serve a purpose of not smashin into the wheel or windshield.. and should go off wether its direct or off to the side or what not..

imo

Thanks guys for all your replys...

Shad- Yes she hit it head on and I am kinda glad it didn't go off but then again I'm not... you know.

I'm gonna call Chrysler tomorrow and see what they say but I would think that hitting it dead on with a tree in the front end would be what they test those things on but i could be wrong. I don't really care about the car so much as her but as soon as I get some pics and figure out how to put them on here I will post them and see what you think. Thanks again guys.

My wife broad-sided a big old mercury in her '98 Durango about 3 years ago

She estimated about 45 mph when she saw the guy pull out in front of her

Both bags deployed - she only got a scratch from the dash or something

She was 5 months prego at the time

Gotta love the toughness of the big Dodge

Just a thought, after rolling it over was the electrical system still intact, was the engine still runnung, etc or did the momentum of the rollover force the D into a tree.
I also have a Durango and am concerned.

ok, just to clear a few things up, a side or rear impact should not deploy the air bags, if you get hit in the rear physics say you will be pushed into your seat and the air bags would do more harm then good if they deployed in that situation, and a side impact you should (in theorie) be push from side to side, a side impact air bag is made for this, but i don't think the darango's are equiped with them. and yes in a front impact air bags should deploy, but with all the damage your causing it is possible to damage the sensores, which they try to make them so they won't be damaged in a way that will make them not function. also an are bag has a primer and a form of a propelent, like a bullet, when the charge gets set off the gas's produced are what fills that bag, some times they are "dud'd" for lack of a better term, and some times they are just delayed, sometimes up to a couple hours. if she hit head on then they should of deployed but some times, for several differnt reasons they don't. i hope this helps you understand a lil, it's all kinda hard to explain in a way that is understandable.

The airbags in the Dak are triggered by g-forces. If she didn't hit the front at very fast of a speed to cause a sudden stop with enough forces to trigger the sensors, then the airbags won't go off. It's a "safety" feature so the bags don't deploy on small fender benders. I would be more concerned about her seat belt coming undone than the airbags not deploying. I wrecked my truck by hitting some stacked railroad ties head on. I was probably doing at least 40-50mph when I hit them, and my airbags dind't deploy, but it wasn't a hard impact either since the railroad ties gave way and didn't cause a sudden stop. I'm glad they didn't go off because there was no injury to me or my passenger, but I'm sure there woudl have been had the airbags eployed. I woudln't have been able to see to keep the truck straight and get it stopped before the sharp dropoff.

Yapping on the cell phone in an SUV interferes

Putting on your makeup in the rear view mirror on the way to work will cause the vehicle to roll and the airbags won't deploy, so you don't poke your eye out with your lipstick. It's a safety feature.
