 Subject: 7.25 rear end replacement

I just had my 7.25" rear end go south after 185,00 miles. I need to know if the 8.25" rear end will swap right in. I know it will physically fit, but I didn't know if there were any issues with the drive shaft mating to the rear end, since I have the 4-cyl/5 speed. I'd rather have the 8.25, anyway, so I can install a limited slip, to get me by 'til I get a 4x4. I'm planning on a V-8 4x4 next, but my "little" Dakota still runs too good to get rid of (at least until the Harley's paid off.)

I'm thinking that the drive-shaft could work, but you may have to cross-reference a rear u-joint to mate with the 8-1/4.
That's what I did when I swapped my 8-1/4 to a late 60's 8-3/4 in my 92 Dakota.
I took it to a machine shop and they checked the diameter of the 8-3/4 and the diameter of the 8-1/4. What they came up with was a u-joint that fit the 8-1/4 driveshaft, and also fit the 8-3/4 rearend.
I would think that there would be a u-joint to do the samething with your driveshaft and an 8-1/4.
I still have the rearend if you're interesed. It's an 8-1/4, sure grip (posi), 3.90 gears and very, very low miles. I'll take $600 for the whole thing.

CA SDAK I need to know if that rear would fit on my 70 dodge dart swinger, right now there is a 7.25 in it and with a 383 Im scared it wont handle the power. I came across this board looking for info on different rearends haha, anyways email is gweedo126@hotmail.com
