Subject: What rearends come in Dakotas?
IP: Logged

Message:
Right now I have open diff. and I am doing a 5.9L swap. Needless to say, I would be just going in circles with the open diff. What rearends came in the Dakotas? I want it gear for acceleration but I need to find either a dakota rearend or another rearend with the same gearing and preferably posi.

Thanks
Dan

Well if you are starting from scratch then any axle can be made to fit. A dana 60, 70, ford 9 1/2 could all be made to work. With that said the cheapest bet would be a 9 1/4 out of a dak. You can either install a locker of your choice or get one with factory unit already in it. The 9 1/4 is also used in the 1/2 ton Ram so it is plenty strong enough for all but the most extreme situations in a Dakota. You would not want to go rock crawling with a 500HP beast and 50" tires but just about anything less then that and you should not have any real issues. The old style detroit locker and the ARB air locker are my two favorites for hard use.

Thanks for the quick responses!!!!! I am lowering my Dakota and turning it into would you could classifiy as modern muscle I guess, big cam, head work, exhaust, etc. I have an older Ramcharger 4X4, no sure what rearend, but would that work. It's a 1984 Ramcharger. I just don't know if there are any difference between the older rearends and the newer ones.

Thanks
Dan
